I have noticed some of the bigger knife stores have ridiculous shipping rates...just wondering if anybody knows why this is? 1 store charges 10 bucks for shipping (the actual shipping price) while another storage charged 35 bucks. Yikes! Sad to see they are making extra money off shipping.

rant over...

W&W and TNK are express shipping with TNK it is usually next day W&W within in a couple of days, that is why they are a little more. If you bring them in from the US USPS is the way to go.

Hey, I work in shipping near the border in the US and can vouch that shippin across the border into Canada does often cost quite a bit and some suppliers may just have a generic shipping calculator and not worry about minor losses. as an example today I ups shipped a 6 lb package with a value of $5 usd. and shipping was around $38. It also depends as shipping rates vary from company to company because larger or smaller companies get a different discount rate with their shippers. Hope this helped to answer some of your question or maybe at least to understand why shipping costs can vary so much from different companies

I don't mind the $50 in shipping so much as the gouging that goes on by the way of "customs and brokerage fees". fedex hit me w $84 on 500. Puts a serious cramp in Canadians knife collectors buying power. No more shipping or gouging fees on knives needs to be included in the pipeline deal our countries are trying to hammer out

As DRK said, use USPS shipping to Canada. The other carriers are the ones that hit you with brokerage fees. Also, learn to shop around. Finding the best online price is step one. Step two is adding in shipping. Learn which dealers give you the best overall price plus decent service.

The small companies are the ones offering $10 shipping while the bigger companies are offering $35 shipping. I guess they don't care whether they receive Canadian business. 2 of the websites are gpknives and also knifeworks. I would definitely buy from them, but the fact that they are price gouging on shipping ticks me off.

Kyle_4, I've wondered myself if some of those high shipping charges are a way of saying that Canada is too much trouble to ship to. But GPKnives and Knifeworks are two really good dealers. It might be worth the time to contact them and ask what's up.

By the way, what's with the Canadian post office. I've been coming across stories that they won't be providing home delivery anymore, only delivery to neighborhood box units. That probably means all packages become "come and get them" requiring a trip to the post office.

The first (and last) time I shipped a knife via USPS Priority Mail small flat rate box from the US to CA it was $20. It had been awhile since I shipped to CA and apparently forgot that I used to ship first class, which is usually only a couple bucks extra.

As for the price gouging, like others mentioned, it depends on the method they used. If they're charging $30+ to ship a single knife via USPS First Class then that's bad, but it seems every method outside of that is considerably more expensive.

Yep, that's correct. Won't be for a while but they're phasing out actual to the door delivery. Will save millions... apparently. Not so handy for anyone with mobility issues, especially in winter. Who knows, there's still time to change it still to accomodate I hope! Stamp prices are also going up to $1 apiece. Thanks Canada Post.

In regards to other parts of the post, USPS definitely the way to go, but most of the time shipping is quite pricey which does put a damper on buying sometimes...

My wife works for Canada Post and it really is becoming a joke in there they get paid $1 per package on top of regular delivery and they have to bring it to your door whether its a knife or a TV its still only $1 so I dont blame the unions for wanting to eliminate that part. As for the actual shipping its about the same to get things from the US as it is from within Canada specially after you get nailed with brokerage fees cuz they used fedex. My wife ordered a small sebenza for my on our anniversary and it was $35 to ship and another $60 in brokerage fees. Now I buy mostly from W&W or S&Rknives and here on the exchange its just less hastle

I understand your frustration then. Wish my answer could have been more helpful. I would follow the advice to contact the company and ask whats up and if they have any different shipping options. maybe the possibility of lost business will inspire them to look for better shipping rates.

They have told me they will only ship USPS express mail because then they have delivery confirmation. This makes no sense as I get tracking number and delivery confirmation when other items are shipped with USPS first class mail (less expensive option). To put the cherry on top, the difference between the shipping options is roughly $10 vs. $20 not $10 vs $35. I wish we had shipping options like you guys in the states, my wallet would be much lighter though!

I just shipped a parcel to Ontario for our Christmas exchange and it was $22.48. I think it will get worse before it gets better. I have never had home delivery of mail so that doesn't affect me.

In single-family homes, we get delivery to the door. In multifamily buildings, we get delivery to a multi-box unit in the building lobby or to a free-standing unit nearby, not a neighborhood unit at a distance.

When I moved to New Jersey, I was surprised to find that the delivery was to our apartment's mail slot in the door, which are on the second door. I had never seen that in New York City. But I think it is only to my building, the way the post office got tricked into allowing it years ago. :)

Some buildings in poor neighborhoods in NYC have community box units in a gated compound for security. Mail delivered to the building would be stolen.

Why would someone complain about getting extra money to do their job? Aren't the carriers already getting $24 per hour plus benefits?

You would move a TV or couch or bookshelf for $1? I wouldn't. Postal workers are not paid $24 per hour they get paid per route so if a route pays $120 per day then you get $120 whether it takes 5 hours or 10 hours. Some routes get paid peanuts cuz of how long it takes to deliver. So to deliver a TV for $1 sucks. And you would be surprised at how bad the benefits are there atleast for the workers in the union my wife is in.

That's what USPS calls a rural route, A city delivery route gets an hourly wage and the same benefit structure as all other regular full-time employees.

Here they are called RSMC's(Rural and Suburban Mail Carrier) they deliver to road side mailboxes as well as the community mailboxes in city neighborhoods. My wife delivers to the door if it requires signature and if no one is home they card it and drop it at the local post office. The workers don't want to be hauling massive packages door to door and finding no one home so they want it changed to where all packages go to the office. Last Christmas she had to strap a 50" TV to her roof just to find no one home ( damn she was pissed lol)

Here's pics she sent me last week, its was a "lighter" day for mail this time of year.

the bundled up mail is her regular route and the boxes are the $1 each
