Shipping ZT to Canada?

Unfortunately that is a problem in many areas of the world. Many people are taught from an early age to fear weapons and those who carry them. In Canada specifically, there is an underlying connotation that only those who carry and use them are criminals and psychopaths, which is unfortunate.

The majority of people up here, or at least the more vocal group, cry foul at even a Buck. The less traditional, the more likely someone will cry foul and this becomes more of a reality the further you go to a densely populated area. It's an unfortunate truth.

The CBSA really dont have a clue.. now im going to buy more knives. This is the opposite of what they want. Way to go boneheads.

Even if they ban flippers it wont change anything. Autos and butterfly knives are illegal here and i know lots of guys that have them. I dont just cuz theyre not my thing, but if i wanted one i could have it today.

Our laws up here are a total joke and only obeyed by nerds and business owners because they have no choice.

Alright, time to crack my knuckles and buy a new knife today. There is a blue XM18 ive been eyeing. This one's for you CBSA!

I wanted to weigh in for those who have talked about not undervaluing an item, CBSA agents are concerned primarily about taxes and only a far second or maybe third about public safety hence an expensive item is likely to be inspected. My experience has been 200 is about the amount that gets their attention. Like USA made Blades said above its usually not a problem. Also just to put some at ease the worst case scenario is having your knife confiscated if that happens you can appeal (it never works out in your favor) or just have the knife sent back to the originating address by UPS it sucks but it's not the end of the world. Good thread thanks for having the discussion, this is not a problem only for Canada I once shipped a knife to Switzerland is was a gift so no $ involved and the receiver had to pay $50 in customs because I put a value. Same is true of Greece and a few others again I have a friend in Greece who had to pay $300 extra for an F3.

"Paragraph (a)" weapons
18. Weapons that fall under paragraph (a)include the following:

  • (a) Automatic knife – An automatic knife is one that houses a blade that will open automatically by applying hand pressure to a button, spring, lever, or other device, in or attached to the handle of the knife, including knives that have a button, spring, lever, or other device, located in the spine of the handle and attached to the inner part of the blade.
  • Note: Knives that have a 'thumb stud' attached to the blade of the knife, that is independent of the handle (not protruding from the handle in the closed or folded position), and that open automatically by applying pressure to the thumb stud, do not generally meet the above definition of a prohibited weapon, and as such do not generally fall under TI 9898.00.00. However, if such a knife is found to also open by gravity or by the application of centrifugal force alone, it may still be considered to be prohibited. The misuse of knives may nonetheless be punishable under other laws.
  • (b) Centrifugal knife (folding knife, butterfly knife, balisong knife) – A centrifugal knife is one that opens automatically through the use of centrifugal force. Centrifugal force may be defined as a force, arising from the body's inertia, which appears to act on a body moving in a circular path and is directed away from the centre around which the body is moving. That is, centrifugal force is established when the blade of the knife may be opened with the flick of the wrist.
  • Note that extra manipulation and a requirement for some skill to release the blade do not prevent a knife from being a prohibited weapon. A balisong or butterfly knife is a form of centrifugal knife with two handles that counter-rotate around the blade such that, when closed, the blade is concealed within grooves in the handles.
  • (c) Gravity knife – A gravity knife is a knife which may be opened automatically by force of gravity. The knife may be additionally controlled by a lever or button, but typically, applying pressure to such a device and pointing the knife downward will result in the knife's blade releasing and locking into place.

Technically a flipper knife is now an automatic to the CBSA lol

Honestly I know even a petition won't work in Canada.

Way to make a bunch of law abiding citizens into instant criminals. How about for the average Canadian who bought a Kershaw flipper at Walmart and doesn't follow knife laws.

Honestly thanks alot Canadian government. You know how many assaults have been made possible by that dangerous flipper tab.

Thanks for quoting that. And this has changed just in the last few weeks?

EDIT: Looking at the top of the Memorandum, it looks like the wording for the definition of Automatic Knife was updated in November of last year.

Yeah, it's been that way for a while. It's weird. You won't get one through the border if it's from China. I had two seized and destroyed. But all of the ones from America, although were stopped, made it through. So it is definitely cause to be wary, but it does appear that they will make it through... Just better hope the officer reviewing your file is having a good day lol

If you go to the Criminal Code link provided in the Memorandum it states:

prohibited weapon means
  • (a) a knife that has a blade that opens automatically by gravity or centrifugal force or by hand pressure applied to a button, spring or other device in or attached to the handle of the knife, or

  • (b) any weapon, other than a firearm, that is prescribed to be a prohibited weapon; (arme prohibée)

Yeah, they're still legal for use in Canada. It's just that the CBSA can't seem to find it in itself to train its agents to realize if you're not loaded a spring when you close the knife, it can't possibly be an auto

By these definitions, all modern single-hand opening folders are illegal.

Or am I reading them wrong?

You are reading them wrong.

But as in any country the folks in charge prefer the law to be grey vs. black and white. That way if a new wrinkle appears; IE the popularity of knives that open by manipulating the blade something not seen as a problem when the law was written they can throw the same blanket over the new mechanism vs. writing a new law and bringing it into force.

The knife laws in Canada need a serious re-think and overhaul! They are out dated and largely ineffectual.

We could make every conceivable form of knife legal for possession and carry, and the common kitchen knife would still be the #1 knife used in crime in Canada.

We need to STOP prohibiting every "scary" looking inanimate object and realize that it is behaviour that needs to change.
We need serious consequences for seriously bad behaviour before anything will change!

So shut up and give me my d@*n flipper!:D

I ordered a kershaw assisted flipper which got stopped by the cbsa. I then received a letter saying that it was stopped as a prohibited weapon bla bla bla and asked if I wanted to dispute this desision, they also listed 6 conditions that if one applied would make my knife not relevant to the criminal code defition which prohibits my knife here they are...1 the article was sent as a gift, 2 the article was purchased solely for collection or decorative purposes, 3 the owner or purshaser purpose to use the article only to practice martial art or sport, 4 the article will be used in a safe and controlled invironment, 5 the owner or purshaser believes that similar goods are or have been sold in Canada, and 6 the owner or purchaser has, or knows of others who have imported similar goods previously. I disputed the decision basing my argument on 4, and 6 what do you think my chances are?

When did this happen? and May I ask which part of Canada are you located in? Don't need a city, but a province would help.

I live in southern Ontario, just happend August 30th and I sent the letter to them last week.

Sorry to hear that. I just got a ZT assisted flipper sent from the US... Did it show you that it could denied on the tracking information or was it just nothing then you received a letter?

That's a list of arguments that will not be considered as an argument.

The vendor I bought it from did say it could be stopped. Funny thing is my brother ordered a kershaw auto the same way and it got through. Seems kinda random the way they stop things.
