Early reports say there is a multiple shooting at a Montreal College . More than one gunmen with several dead and wounded . The search is still going on for hidden gunmen . Reports are still pretty garbled .

Holy crap. Reports so far of 4 dead and 16 injured, 1 suspect "neutralized," but potentially other shooters in hiding.

Not islamists; more like Columbine. One shooter described as white, about 19, multiple piercings and a black trenchcoat.

That's too bad. Prayers for the victims families.

Gonna be a dark night for Canadian Gun laws, though.

They are still searching door to door at Dawson College . 10,000 students . Most are evacuated . Supposedly two gunmen dead . The discrepancy in the number of gunmen is the various unofficial cell phone calls to parents by students . It is still unclear as to the amount injured . These are barely more than kids to me .

I didn,t want to mention gun laws at this moment . This is sure to put them back in the forefront .

Oh damn, the only thing that is being said here in the US is that a man in camouflaged pants and black t-shirt started shooting in the cafeteria.

Sorry to hear that, smoke up for the victims.

2 shooters dead, police hunting a 3rd.

It will be very unlikely if this has an effect on Canada's gun laws. The recently elected government ran on a platform that opposed Canada's long gun registry; they won't mess with their base of support.

FWIW, some restrictions (e.g. magazine size) in our gun laws date to a very similar shooting about 20 years ago, when a shooter with a 30 bullet magazine on his gun shot female engineering students at another college - while shouting anti-feminist slogans. It was argued that fewer women would have died, if he'd had to stop and re-load more frequently.

Even fewer would have died had the girls been allowed to carry arms.

Fewer women students would have died had their been more armed female students.

As for mag cap; an average shooter can wreak havoc with a ten round, or eight round, or five round limit.
Or take single shot; in Columbine the perps could have loaded singly without inference from most of the victims hiding under desks.
Single shot is very fast in the right hands. The attack against semi automatic firearms becomes an attack on all civilian arms.

Didn't mean to give pro or con to the argument, or derail Kevin's thread. Just noted that the previous Montreal shooting is the marker incident for some such Canadian laws.

Again, I'd be very surprised if Harper's conservative government would have any interest or intention of restricting gun access in Canada any more than it is now. The pro-gun (or at least, anti-gun control) lobby was instrumental in electing him, and he won't bite that hand.

Canada's political culture wouldn't, however, support weakening restrictions on handgun ownership and carrying - nor would Harper try to make it so.

This is on the heels (Just barely) barely of a shooting at a womans college here a while back . I believe there were fourteen women killed .

As has been said . It isn,t mag capacity it is the capacity of the perpetrator for violence . Where there is a will there is a way .

I do not think there has been much in the way of digression here . We are just reflecting upon different aspects of this tragedy .

I thought the armed teacher in Japan killed 7 or 8 with his blade, several years ago now.

How many serial killers uncaught pile up the bodies with very few weapons in use?

Guys, it didn't help in Columbine that the laws were different. I suspect that's because kids aren't allowed to carry guns to school.

FWIW, dunno how many times I've heard about knife length restrictions in schools and colleges ... more frequently on the US side of the border than the Canadian side. I can't imagine that a US college or high school forbidding folks to carry knives with more than a 3" blade would welcome girls carrying Glocks in their purses instead.

Arm at least some of the teachers, then.

But we are getting away from the trajedy- we have enough pain in this world brought down upon our heads, let alone someone acting out crazy.

12 admitted to hospital, 8 in critical condition. 2 of those are undergoing emergency surgery as we speak.

I agree, Munk, I've drifted this off-course from the tragedy. Sorry if I've offended folks here - I'm madder than hell.

Gulliani said on TV during the five year commenurative interviews that he still gets mad; and you can feel that anger across the crowd on ground Zero.

I just read about this on Yahoo. The story there said that there was one gunman and that he shot himself after shooting 12 others. Prayers from my area.

There are so many rumours going around that I do not feel I should add to them anymore . All I can say is that it seemed like the Montreal Police did their job very well .

I don,t always have a high opinion of them . (Training or demeanor)
They seemed to do very well with securing the area , evacuating the students and remaining calm .

As far as I could see it was mostly hand guns against what was supposed to be an automatic weapon . (Rumor)

I doubt if there were ten thousand students in the school at the time . It must have numbered in the thousands .

The mayor has been quoted as saying That Montreal is a peaceful community and more will have to be done to make it so . He did not put this in a good light . He is a man not particularly well liked and will work something like this to fulfill a political agenda .

I have family that lives across the street and attends the school . They were never in any danger as they take night courses .

A professor at the school who must have been in the mental health profession stated several obvious conclusions that have been bandied about since these incidents became more frequent . He then ended with the comment that peoples description of the gunman displayed to him stereo-typing . This was in reference to the gunman being described as having a mohawk and multiple piercings . To me what are you going to see when glancing quickly at some whacko(stereotyping?) with a gun . O:K: you or I would proabably be looking at the gun to see if its real . We proabably would also notice Mr. whacko,s general appearance . Unless you are a trained observer you tend to look at and describe superficial features .

Just as a bit of trivia I have been in a crowded trade school hallway with a teacher and several students . One student had brought in all kinds of gear strapped to and hanging from his body . One bit of gear was an Uzi replica which he calmly jammed into the teachers belly . I was looking at the guy deciding where best to hit him when it became apparent it was a replica .
This guy was a security guard and you guessed it quite the whacko .
Nothing happened to him and the teacher never even looked down to see what was pressed against his belly .

The condemned man ate a hearty meal............Note also that the Mafia love to schedule hits on their own folks for moments right after the guy has just stuffed himself on linguini and a nice chianti. Many older religions fattened up the animals used for ritual sacrifice, etc. (Tongue in cheek) They even start a life time of "Marital Bliss" with a feast.......(I know, I know, I just couldn't let it alone)
