Shooting in Montreal.

The Quebec Gov. is on T.V right now saying the gun registry has to stay in place so this won't happen again..... I can't believe this crap !!!

People have died. I do appreciate the thread drifts in the cantina, but do you think this is the right place and time to complain about gun laws?

Yes, consider what may have happened if some of those hapless victims had been permitted to defend themselves. But, who cares, as long as the authorities are there to make bold statements and cart the bodies off.

Well, Richard, the thread did progress;
We had anger over the event
We had sorrow over the event
We asked, 'why' and 'how' afterwards

That's the normal order of dealing with grief. Certainly if we'd jumped into the crime with a dry analysis of gun law it would be inappropriate.

Munk anything I had to say was in reference to Canada,s gun laws . I would never make a comment upon another countries laws unless there was a direct link to them .

I do believe my countries laws are designed to discourage casual use of firearms . To me macho titillation fits right into that category .

Enjoying shooting a firearm is not some kind of titillation . At least not for me . I enjoy the challenge it gives me . That is why for the most part I shoot a longbow with arrows I have made myself . I consider it more of a challenge .

Kevin I agree totally , but for me the game I take during the fall also helps to fill the freezer just like my grandpa and dad did before me.

Pardon me . When something is as important and charged as this incident I sometimes forget to point out exactly what I am referring to .

I referred to restricted weapons and I should have pointed out specifically handguns . Some people do look at the negative side of things when all restricted means is that you have to have a good reason to own one .
I personally don,t want anyone to own one that does not have a good reason to own it .

Hunting rifles are for the most part not restricted at all . The only requirements I know of is that you prove you know how not to shoot yourself in the foot or anyone else .

Kevin,
My point is I don't want a central authority/beaucracy rationing out something important as firearms by 'taste'. There are tasteless people who own arms and who do not commit crimes.
As you know, in my country possession of firearms is a constitutional right linked to liberty, and not solely sporting usefullness.

You spoke of screening out these posturing bufoons. That just gets into the 'us' and 'them'; where firearms are the province of a priviledged class. In my country, the firearm class is anyone who has not committed a felony or is insane. That is as it should be in my opinion.

Hey- Take Care. I like Kevin the Grey. He's a neat guy who brings much to the table and lives in Canada.

I just wish th gov't wouldn't take a horrible situation like this, and make it
every responsilble gunowners nightmare.

I do enjoy the different perspective . I happen to agree with it for the most part .

I do think there should be some kind of screening process . Maybe in a perfect world it would work .
Right now they want me to have five neighbors sign letters that I am a good guy . I only have one neighbor that I would want to know I have firearms .

And there you have it. The guy in Montreal who took a Beretta assault rifle, a 4 shot 12 gauge and a .45 handgun into a school to shoot people, in the certain knowledge he was going to be shot himself WAS insane.

So how do you stop the insane getting firearms? Well in the UK, to get a Shotgun Certificate (sporting shotgun), or a Firearm Certificate (hunting rifle, target rifle), you have to have the application certified by your family doctor that he feels you are a 'stable minded' person. You also have to have a person of high standing in the community to certify you are who you say you are, and that they think you are a right and fit person to own a firearm.

The fly in the ointment with that, is the black market in illegal firearms.

These tragedies happen and we think they are a new phenomenon, but I wonder if these things did sometimes happen in the past, but nowadays media makes it more globally known.

I don't know what the solution is, but I do think the idea of having sensible, well trained members of the public in possession of firearms is a good thing.

I relinquished all my firearms when I left the UK, but I would like to get a milsurp here as I collect militaria. I would like something both historic, good for target shooting and game shooting. Talk of tightened legislation doesn't fill me with optimism.

And Wayne, not just every responsible gunowners nightmare, the caption under that knife-wielding maniacs picture said 'Taste my STEEL'.

I don't see the need for his image to be posted here...I understand the point, but it seems to glorify him by hanging his pisture.

So senseless...such a shame.

Smoke for the families of the victims.

IShooting a elephant with a full auto small arm would seem suicide to me.

A 50 Browning might do it, but I'd want to be at least 1000 yards away from the elephant when I started shooting.

munk

I agree. Having studied war elephants I find that they are among the most dangerous animals out there. More zoo keepers are killed by elephants than any other zoo beast.

When an elephant is hurt, they can go beserk. Killing their riders, mahouts, own troops as well as the enemy.

But for shock value against their enemies.....

His image did not glorify him to me . As Munk pointed out it is hard to put a face on insanity . It might be a hopeless attempt on my part to understand what made him do it .

I agree with both of you. If this was Fox News I'd be against it- no image, no black glory or advertisement for this kind of behavior. But we have a very small venue here, and the forum is specialized. We are able to broach many subjects taboo in other places, and seeing this face of idiotic evil has some intrinsic value.

I admit it's kind of disgusting and disapointing. Now I've seen it, wouldn't hurt me at all if it went away. But I don't have to look at it; I'm on page three.

I posted two picture: The first one with the cheap pakistani knife shows that he was not likely to have been a knife collector - which should be of some interest on a knife collecting forum. The second gives a hint of fantasy; but, may as well have been a holloween costume - time will tell; more to the point it shows who he is not. I attempted neither to glorify, or ridicule, but only to present additional facts.

I have to tell you . I saw a picture of his victim today . We may say its not the same thing . I don,t think I would want to see her picture posted here . A bright , fresh faced , future ahead of you . whole world at your feet kind of person .

It is amazing how my perspective can change in half a day . I can still say I am glad to have seen his face and for the same reasons as I stated earlier .

The 19 year old girl who died was named Anastasia DeSousa. I agree with Kevin that out of respect, perhaps we shouldn't post a picture - but she had a name.

It bothers me that 17 years later, I can't remember the name of one of the 14 women killed in the Ecole Polytechnique massacre, but I can instantly spit out the name of the man who shot them.

Anastasia DeSousa. I won't forget this time.
