Looking really good man. It's surprising how much a disc comes in handy when you need it. I use mine all the time and probably could use it more. Congrats!

If you haven't done it already, just swap those wires, red for white on the motor, and your switch will behave like you want it to.

Okay, my buddy was able to get me the pipe this weekend and we welded it up to some 3/4" plate to complete the stand for the horizontal grinder. Seems like a good fit and it feels nice and stable. Now I just need to make some final adjustments, get the VFD wired up and mounted to the bench, and pick up a few odds and ends and it should be up and running soon......

Jonny that is one sweet looking machine!!! Where did you get that bad boy?

Thanks Ben!

Brian Fellhoelter built this one. I was talking with him about grinders way back in November or thereabouts, and he mentioned he might be selling this one, so I jumped on it. Looking forward to getting it going.

Thanks Greg! There will also be a third work rest that I still need to build for the six inch contact wheel, so this will be really versatile. Small wheel, platen, and six inch wheel. Should be able to cover a wide range of stuff.

Looking good Jonny,

You wont know yourself with a horizontal grinder! They are tops mate.

Disc is next on my list of things to do.

Matt

I sure love seeing guys evolution with shop tools. All food for thought as I set mine up this week.

Keep it up and you'll have to go full time.;)

How's the ShopFox Mill treating you?

LOL, wish I could do this every day all day Brian!!
The Shop Fox has been a great machine so far, I am definitely happy with it. not a lot of slop, smooth operation, great powerfeed, very solid machine. It's been getting more and more use lately.

I'm looking forward to it, Matt!

Had a little time and got the motor wired up today. Waiting on some 1/2" aluminum plate to build a bracket to mount the VFD on and some power cord to run it to the 220. Gettin' closer.

I don't get jealous much, but I sure am right now! I saved your pictures so I can build one (Horizontal grinder).

BTW Channellock wire strippers are better!:D

Real nice Johnny, real nice!

I just finished part of a project I have been working on for my garage/shop, and have one more to finish. That is if I can get the last of the components together! It is sweet when you get something like that finished and you step up to it for the first time and use it. It's kind of like what the haties took me so long to get around to doing this!

Thanks guys.

Dixie, I hear ya. I always wish I had done things a long time ago. It sucks a bit to learn what you've been missing out on the whole time! :D As long as we get stuff done eventually I guess we're doin' ok.

Today, in between grinding bevels on a big batch of CPM D2 I just got back from heat treat, my buddy came over and we welded up a mount for the VFD on the horizontal. Fits nicely with plenty of clearance for belts, but is nice and beefy. New 220 circuit getting installed on Sunday morning by an electrician friend of mine and I'll get the wiring finished up and it should be runnin'!

Also, to update......just got to use the disc for the first time the other day, been cleaning up bevels on knives back from heat treat. Very glad I decided to add one to the shop. It really is an amazing tool for getting your bevels good and flat! I can tell I'll need a bit of practice to really get the hang of it, but the learning curve isn't too bad. I've been using a light touch and very low speed to get the feel of how it works and am already feeling ten times more comfortable than the first time I put a blade to the paper:thumbup: Thanks Nick, never would have thought about doing this if not for our visit!

Alright, yesterday my buddy came over and we installed a new dedicated 220 circuit for the 2hp horizontal. I had the controller all wired and ready with a new SO cord power line and twist lock plug. We finished running the new circuit and plugged her in and off she went!

Things are running smoothly and I think I'm going to love having this machine in the shop. I finished building a quick work rest from Micarta for the six inch contact wheel so all three work areas are now set up and ready to go.

I did a bunch of profile finishing on some blades just back from heat treat that I used to do by being hunched over my MAP arm on the KMG before finishing up by hand in the vise with sanding blocks and dowels until my knuckles were all cramped up. With the new grinder it only took a few minutes to do a dozen or so blades! I love how Brian's design allows for the raising and lowering of the work rests to get full use out of belts:thumbup:

Here are a few pics and a video of the new machine up and running...

New 220 outlet. Glad I listened to those who encouraged me to do it the right way rather than slap a dryer plug onto a power cord and plug it into the dryer outlet.

The grinder all set up with three work rests, 2hp, KBAC 27D controller, and a new 30 lb gas spring that I installed to get a little more belt tension to suit my taste.
