I had a painful shop injury today....AND I WASN'T WEARING GLOVES.

These injuries always seem to happen when I don't wear gloves.

I was polishing some aluminum wheel discs to mirror finish when I found some laquer still on one piece that had to be scratched off so I took off my gloves and began scratching the last of the laquer off with my finger nail.

All of a sudden there was a terrible rattle and bang at the back of the shop and it was coming my way. Maggie my shop puppy had gotten her collar tangled with a wheel stand and was coming my direction like a rocket, spooked by all the noise I guess.

I decided to try to catch the pup by her collar and untangle the wheel stand. WRONG DECISION!!

As the pup approached she decided to change direction swinging the wheel stand in my direction and it hit me full in the shin bone....INSTANT pain.

Maggie carried on for a few more steps until she untangled herself from the stand then she came over to see me and inspect the rapidly growing swelling on my shin.

She is just fine but I have a lump on my shin that looks large enough to be another knee cap.

But wearing gloves didn't contribute to the accident.

Shin guards, where were your shin guards !?!?

I think it's great she came over to sympathize. :p

But if you had been wearing gloves you may have gotten tangled in her collar and been drug around more. Thank God you weren't wearing them!

I bet the collar was made from a recycled glove, though, right? :D

Hope the swelling goes down quickly, George! Shin bruises can be annoyingly persistent.

No pictures? Isn't a rule that if you tell us about an injury that you are to post a picture?

I hope that you heal quickly. Get well.

Well, look on the bright side....
Maggie could have been so scared she ran between your legs and the cart would have hit you in the....... Oh, the thought is just too painful to think about!

Sorry to hear about your injury. I know that was painful. Be safe out there. And have a nice Christmas and New Year.:yawn:

The swelling is going down but no bruising yet, I imagine it will be very colourful when it happens.

A word of caution to others, if you have a 20 month old German Sheppard tangled up with a wheel stand rampaging around the shop, DON'T try to help, she will get free herself. This is more dangerous than a buffer can ever be.

You really stopped my heart when I read Shop Injury with your name on the post! Hope you are feeling alot better by now..take care ---Joe

You scared the crap outa me too George!!!!!
Sure am glad you and Maggie didn't get hurt bad!!!!!

just the other day i was out grinding and the tang was in my right hand and the dip pan was on my left up by the motor. it got hot and i reached accros to dip and my forarm hit the belt. 60 grit 4000 SFPM. it removed some skin but is allmost healed up now. i now have a 5gal bucket under the contact wheel that i dip in. good thing it was not a 36grit belt.

Glad to hear you are okay. We can never be too safe. What about keeping puppies out of the shop?

John

You may be onto to something there John, my puppies are always in the shop and between the two there is almost 300 lbs of dog, one is an Irish Wolfhound and the other is an Irish Wolfhound Rottweiler mix, and I am surpised I haven't broken something tripping over a fuzzy beast intent on sleeping at my feet while I work:rolleyes:

I have complained before about having a dog big enough to take handle material off the top of your workbench when you are not looking (although they don't do that much since I started treating it all with Nelsonite;)) Last week the Wolfhound did steal an inkpen off my bench as she was leaving for the night. The next day my wife asked me why the dog was BLUE, I went to see that my Irish Wolfhound looked like a damned Muppet with long blue fuzzy fur.

Hey, you know I bit my tongue quite hard at dinner tonight and I wasn't wearing gloves either. Coincidence?.... Hmmm I wonder?

Dang IG, you scared me for a minit. Too bad you didn't have that on vidio, you could have made some $ on funniest home vidios.

The pup feels that it is her job to keep me entertained so she brings me her ball to kick or throw down the length of the shop and whenever I step back from the grinder she barks and points out the ball. My job is to kick or throw it.

Whenever I get lax she will bring the ball to me and place it between my feet while I am grinding so I can't possibly miss it.

She will do this non stop all day long, at least until 2:30 or so then she will nap until quitting time.

The good thing is that she will announce visitors, anyone knocking on the overhead door, and she will poke me in the pocket if my cell phone is vibrating and I don;t answer it right away.

LOL. Misdirection leads to big chuckle! Nice post!

It has been a week and the bruising is just starting to come out, purple ankle and a huge yellow patch on the front of the shin......and TENDER!!

I can walk fine but I have to take care not to bump anything with the shin.

The look in Maggie's eyes as she streaked towards me dragging that jack stand still haunts me, like something from a horror flick.

Never a dull moment with pets around!! My Rott. was sick this fall and run up enough in vet bills to cover a fully loaded kmg!!! But when I look into her eyes,it does'nt matter, she's happy & healthy now! Gotta love'm :D:D [or don't have'm]

Protect that leg!! Not much meat around the shin area, makes me kringe just thinking about it!!! Glad it was'nt worse!

Actually guys, I sorta cringe when I hear of folks having "shop pets". It's OK I suppose when you doing the finish work and stuff but pets have no place around a forge, grinder, buffer, or drill press for that matter.

I'm sorry but if a cat got caught up in my drill press I'm not reaching in to grab it until the thing comes to a halt! That's just the way it is...
