Shop organization

one thing i have organization wise you can see in the pic is the black plastic tower with clear containers. It was given to me by a friend who's mom was a scrapbooker. The containers are about 12"x12". Great size to hold sandpaper, sheets of kydex, micarta, etc. I marked each container (kydex, leather, sandpaper by grit, pin stock, etc) and just pull the whole container down to my bench depending on what I'm doing. It also keeps everything clean, since the containers have hinged lids. Nice too, that the containers are see through. I can't imagine it was too expensive.

Here are a couple things I do to stay organized in my shop. First I got a pine dowel from the local home improvement store and cut it into 12 inch pieces. I mounted them below my shelf to hang belts on. Each one is labeled with the grit.

Another thing I do is when I get new belts I write the actual grit on them multiple times with a sharpie on the inside, so I don't have to remember that a A160 Trizact Gator is 120 grit!

I keep these drawers under my bench. It's very convenient for holding pencils, paint markers and measuring tools in the top drawer and wood, liner material and other odds and ends in the rest. And yes, that's an enormous slab of 2" thick micarta next to the drawers[emoji50]

Another nice thing to have is a whiteboard for doing quick calculations or jotting down notes. Even better if it's magnetic.

This is my simple contribution. For my hand sanding workbench, a simple paper sorter. I cut my sheets into 4 strips, then sort them 150 up to 1200.

I posted my belt rack and tool arm racks in different posts. I could put them here too. Is this going to be a sticky? :)

I have my sheets of sandpaper stored in a large accordion folder. I started doing this a long time ago when woodworking. It really helps to keep up with it and I can always throw the smaller pieces in with the big ones and keep those organized. I hope this thread becomes a sticky and keeps growing. All these little tiny tips here and there that help make life simpler are welcomed and can really add up to a much improved shop organization system.

I saw where one guy who used rolls for hand sanding handles dangled them from the ceiling on a simple pipe held by chains right above his head. All he had to do was reach up and snip some off as needed with scissors. I'm DEFINITELY using that idea over having them all piled up in a big stack on the desk with loose ends dangling about wherever. Plus it would let you sort them by grit from coarse to fine and just work your way down the line. Next time I'm at the hardware store I'm snagging a few feet of chain and some pvc.

Maybe you get a few ideas from this:

Did a little long overdue re-organizing before the holidays.

Looks familiar. Sometimes I feel corneal pressure trying to find something on my workbench

I feel like posting my ADHD shop just to bring some balance. :o

I really need to implement some of these suggestions.

Just to contribute to this thread here's some pictures on how not to organize you shop lol.

I don't have a lot to add, especially after Ricks immaculate post, but as a safety tip, since my shop is my garage with lots of foot traffic, cut an "x" in a tennis ball and slip that on the horn of your groin level anvil.

I just drooled on my keyboard Rick. That shop is sooo nice!
No kidding! Now I'm really embarrassed that I posted pictures of mine lol. Although it may have lit a fire under me!
