Shop organization

Here is one that I can submit even though my shop is just in its infancy...

Have a CLEAN area for layout, sheaths, etc. Some steps just don't do well with dust, dirt, and grime.

I try to be of the mind set to buy once, cry once and only get the tools that I NEED but get quality tools to fill those needs. However, sometimes it just plain makes sense to have multiples of certain tools (such as calipers for example) stashed at key locations within the shop where you will need them and then you can have a specific spot for each individual caliper at all the stations you use them at so you don't wind up loosing them or chasing them down all the time. For that example of calipers, maybe have one nice Mitutoyo/Starrett/etc and then stash an inexpensive one at the bandsaw, layout station, drill press, grinder, etc for more rudimentary tasks.

I love shop organisation. It's pretty tidy in my workshop, almost all of the time.

The empty spot beside my grinder is reserved for my second grinder which is ordered.

Cheap towel racks make for good clamp storage. Behind the clamps is my steel storage. It's a shelf the full length of the work bench. Steel gets stored on this end, sheets of G10/Micarta/Kydex on the other end.

Slots in the upright frame allows storage of tool arms.

Storage underneath for my leather working supplies. This end of the bench has a hardboard top. It's smooth and I can use it for drawing, leather work or eating lunch. The other end is topped with 2x6's and is pre-drilled with T-nuts for mounting vises or my stitcher.

Belt storage

Sandpaper storage

Small bins for corbys/pins/loveless screws, and magnetic tool holders on underside of the shelf so oiled handles can dry without touching anything.

Jess, I am using this idea. Now that I have more attachments than a platen and tool rest I need storage. I have a post like this I hang my 4 1/2" grinders from on homemade hooks. I live this idea, more so than spending the cash on steel like. I have plenty of wood scraps laying around I can make something like this out of.

I haven't taken posession of them yet, I just need to bring a trailer down the next time I go see my mom. Her and her new husband just bought a new house together and I've been helping them move some of the larger items and he is giving me some vintage type cabinets he has and doesn't want to move to the new house. He is giving me somewhere between 8 and 16 sets of something close to these, and appear to be in better shape as well. This is just the closes picture I could find on google. Forgot to take some pictures while I was there. I think they are going to be sweet for storing all kinds of things. Can't wait to g get them.

Here is one that I just did to sort my most frequently used cobalt bits. Two for wood and two for metal of each size are there. 3/8", loveless bolts, 1/4", 1/8", kydex drill, and countersink. These are all pretty new bits as I just restocked. I just sit this next to my drill press. I just made it from some scrap 3/4" cedar boards I had laying around. Clean, simple, cheap, and organized.

I would have gone with smaller pvc pipe, lots of wasted space there.

+1 on that. That would take up way too much room in my shop. I need more room as it is now. About to get a wood bandsaw or, small table saw or compound miter saw and trying to figure out where I can put it.
