I could of sworn you mentioned the idea of a paid weekend knife making course or something awhile back? Was there any follow up? Or am I dreaming😃

I have considered it, but don't think anyone would be willing to pay enough to cover materials and time. Plus, to do it right would be at least a 2 day class. Figure on rough grinding a blade, 6 hours for heat treat, finish grinding the blade, cut out and glue on handles, let glue dry for at least 6 hours, then final shaping the handles.

2 day class, lunch included both days, $150/head, 6-8 students max?
that's less than I have seen other knifemaking workshops go for, and consistent with a lot of 1 and 2-day woodworking classes.

I would be interested.

I was thinking for a scandi ground knife about $100 plus materials (steel, handle material, belts), which should make it less than $150, unless they want some exotic handle material. I would have everything ordered in advance.

I would soooo be in for this!

a bar of 1" x1/8" x 8" long 1084 per student?
if they want a handle material different from your stock materials, they could bring it themselves.
use some of the class funds to buy a 3rd 2x42?
offer a 1/2 tuition refund if they cancel more than 2 weeks before the event, no refund if less than 2 weeks.

That sounds good, except I would use O1 instead of 1084. I'll start a thread tomorrow to judge interest, and to get a feel if they want to do it on Saturday and Sunday, or on two Saturdays.

If I have enough lead time so I don't schedule a class, I would be in!

So you start with flat stock, not a bar or square stock?

It would be flat stock. This workshop would be for stock removal knives, not forged. Like when we made the Tin knives.
I'm thinking maybe early May? I'll start a thread tomorrow.

I've got room for a student knife maker to crash at my place, about 30 minute from Johns shop. No charge of course (well maybe a sip of whiskey).

Oh, and John, put me down for a class. The opportunity you are offering at $150, is priced at 1/2 it's actual value, IMO

Hey - we might have to make that work!

I'll bring the Michter's American Whiskey.
