Mind if I ask what your two grinders are?

I have been looking for something and I have found a place that will allow for the finance of belt grinders, and that may be a viable option for me.
Though my mind is not made up yet.

Those are 2" x 42" Craftsman grinders. Nothing fancy, but they have worked fine for me for 7 or 8 years.

Great to know.
I have seen a few mods to them that are essentially an angle iron arm that is cantilevered with a spring to tension it and a wheel on the other end to allow it to use 2x72 belts to save on belt cost.

That machine is essentially what I have been weighing out the difference in cost between a financed 2x72" at around $57-$60 a month vs just one smaller (and more easily justifiable) payment on a Craftsman model with a few mods (glass platen and other small stuff).

Thanks, I think this is likely the route I will be taking.

Bill,
I use an older pattern of the 2x42 -- the newer ones have a much better arm design that makes it easier and safer to convex grind.
also - invest in Norton Blaze belts, they really are worth the extra $$ for metal grinding IMHO.

Thanks Vik!
I have used them for my 1x30 (mostly 50grit for roughing since I can't get lower) and I am a fan, thanks for the info.

One thing I learned the hard way was that you can't use the 3m Trizact gators with water... it just causes the belts to shed the grit...

The only thing that I'm not a fan of is the new motor they use, it's 1/3 hp...
It will work for now since I have a spare 1.5 and 2hp motors. My plan is to pull the disc sander and add a single pulley on that shaft, then run that off of a step pulley that is driven by one of my spares with another step pulley to lower the speeds (similar to below)

My only concern is that the motor would then essentially become a generator and I would have to have it grounded off for safety.

Keep an eye out on the Sears outlet site. I just picked up a returned one for $82. Brand new, runs great, and has the full warranty, was just returned and the box was a bit tore up.
