Shop Talk Virtual BBQ and Hammer-in

Ok, then it is on.
I changed the thread title to:
Shop Talk Virtual BBQ and Hammer-in

Stacy, how bout asking anyone who plans on posting a WIP of their making process to add "Virtual BBQ WIP" to the beginning of their thread title? :)

Also.....I know you called it a Virtual BBQ and hammer in, but can stock removal guys play too??:D

I wont be forging but ill follow along and build a yanagi-ba out of some damascus, ive got an anniversay coming up.

This project will be made from a damascus billet laminated to make Japanese kitchen blades.
The project will be a yanagi-ba with a special handle assembly technique. You should be able to make one from mono-steel with only the most basic shop tools.

Now I'm tuned in.

As this is apparently not only a virtual hammer in, but BBQ as well.... I have an idea.

I'll be back...............

Maybe I'll do a WIP on the GNiCr40Al4 framelock I'm about to start. I'll try to shoot for that.

Great idea there. Tai's bringing a uke and snacks, I'll bring some India Pale Ale and my banjo. See y'all at the BBQ.

For those new to hammer-Ins, they aren't strictly the domain of forgers. They cover all aspects of knife making.

I will set up a sticky thread with each WIP as a sub-sticky. That way everyone can follow all the projects with one click. Comments can be made in the individual threads.

As George pointed out these would be most useful as tutorials, with more explanation of the why and how than just "grind the bevels".

I would ask that each presenter make a general introduction to the WIP that can be the header for his sub-sticky.

Something like:
WIP - Bladesmith- Yanagi-ba - Stock Removal
A project to build a damascus Japanese slicing knife with a special handle.

I don't know what I'm going to do yet, but probably a knife I can work on in my spare time... aside from orders etc. A slack time and/or down time project. I need to start something like that anyway.

Sweet! this sounds like fun.
I have a project that i need some motivation finishing... i have the blade forged and ground but i have to polish and etch it before making a leather covered saya with brass fittings. can i do a partial WIP?
thanks

Yeah... but we'll have to call it a kit knife assembly.:p

Rick;)

At the BBQ, we can all sing Kumbaya.

Chris, jump in where you are on the knife. You can explain how you got to this point in words.

You don't want to hear me sing, and for that matter I don't want to hear you guys sing. Let's avoid the kumbaya, please. :)

I think it was the new fish tank that did it. I moved it on Christmas morning from the living room to my daughter's bedroom. Who knew a ten gallon aquarium filled with water, gravel plants and fish would weigh so damn much! Well, anyway, I now out of knife making action for a bit after aggravating a spinal nerve condition. Swelling, acute persistent pain, and numbness are at the point where I can't work.

But...... I can still cook.

I am a retired chef who has always had interest in the varied regional cuisines of North America. I spent a great deal of my career in the Washington DC area working for a large organization. There, while exploring my culinary interests I was also responsible for standardizing recipes for use in our satellite stores and restaurants. Inevitably this process included conducting what amounted to "virtual cooking classes" designed to teach the extended culinary department how to do stuff.

That's what I'd like to do as my contribution to the BBQ portion of this thread. For the knife portion, I can't make them at the moment, but I will show some of what's in my kit and what I've been using for years.

In essence this will be a photo tutorial done in much the same manner as a knife WIP: complete recipes, detailed instruction focusing on the hands-on process, lots of photos and possibly a video. The ingredient list will be simple and be representative what anyone should be able to find at the local mart.... anywhere in the world. The tools and techniques will be representative of "industry standards", but yet standards that are quite user friendly and achievable for the kitchen novice- yet intriguing for the seasoned pro. Moreover though, I hope to make this fun.

Now.... what do I cook.

I mentioned my love of varied regional cuisines. So, I think instead of Stacy's proposed BBQ, I'm gonna hold a Cape Breton Caileigh. There'll be music and dancing and laughter.... but most of all there will be food. I'm going to take some classic maritime recipes and give them a bit of a twist.

A full meal's menu to follow this evening.

If anyone's interested, grab a fiddle, c'mon ova n fill yur boots.
