Just had something interesting happen with my old Bader 2. I was grinding away when things went haywire. A loud sound, followed by the 36 grit Cubitron whapping me in the face. Suddenly I get slammed in the shin by what feels like a bowling bowl doing 60MPH. I look down to find the drive wheel spinning on the floor. Apparently the keyway hexhead had worked itself loose and the drive wheel had worked it's way off. Damn that hurts! Put a 2" gash in my shin.

Is it common to use Loctite on a "keyway" hex?? I have NEVER had one come loose like this before.

Sometimes thigs just happen. I periodically check the tightness of rotating stuff because things always seem to work loose.

Damn Fitzo....that is some bad luck!

How bad is the leg? Stitches?

I am with Beowulf.....check the turning stuff regularly. It only takes a minute and could save you a fair amount of pain....

Doc

Thanks. It's just a shallow gash, so no butterflies, thankfully. The wheel's got a ding in the side with a bur and I think that's what nailed me. Gonna be a heckuva bruise, it's still throbbing!

I think I was just more flabbergasted than anything. That danged drive wheel has been on that machine for years. it had to have worked it's way off mostly just during today, because I had just put a new belt on and would have noticed it protruding. SHows how fast things can go awry. Makes more sense why Wilton, BurrKing, and Hardcore put shrouds on the machines!!

Well, this old dog learned a new trick today. I've been through the shop already checking discs on sanders, the wheels on the KMG, etc.

Good advice, guys, thanks!

Ouch!

No probelm on loc-tite. Not so much on the set screw...but use it on the shaft and the wheel bore. It kinda glues everything together and fills in all the gaps from wear and manufacturing tolerance. BUT....you will need a gear puller to remove it. It's no problem with a puller....but a day of headaches and torn up machinery without. :grumpy:

Take care,
Rob

Thanks, Rob, I'll do that. Still have an old gear puller around here from hotrod days, too!

Fatzo; If it hit you in the face it only could be a improvement. Glad you are OK or what ever that means to you?????
I had a 3m 977 40 grit belt snap today on me 2 X 72 surface grinder. It just missed my face. Like you if it would of hit me it would only of be a improvement. :D :D

Ahhh, ya just gotta laff at the roadrash and scoot on down the road, right, old man??? Just so it doesn't mess up the ink, eh?

Glad it missed yer mug, bro!

Glad it missed yer nose. Them belts are expensive!
Hey!!! I heared what you said he first time. The nose is where I need the most help. :D :D I cook one belt on one billet. Usually them suckers last up to 7 or 8 billets. :(

I was trying to be a little nice; why I don't know, you old dog! :D

You gotta remember to anneal those puppies........ ;) :p

that's one of those moments when time goes real slow and fast all at once. i bet it too awhile before your heart started thumpin normally? :)

Uh, that's nasty Fitzo. I often wonder when its going to happen to me. So far I've been just lucky. Hope everything is going to be okay.

Thanks, guys, everything's fine, just gonna have a nice bruise. As long as it isn't an eye or a "time-off" cut to the hand I'm happy.

It's funny about what Tracy says about time; so very true. I was busy watching that belt coming at my face and dodging it unsuccessfully when WHAP that danged wheel hit me in the shin.

I had the bur sanded off and the wheel back on before I ever felt the blood wetting my sock. Priorities, ya know! ;)

:D Man I just had to laugh! Not at your misfortune but knowing exactly what you mean. I think I'll check for loose connections today too, never actually thought about it.

The only time I've had a belt pop it just dropped to the floor. Must have been where the splice was when it went, but I about wet my pants anyway having heard all the stories from you guys about getting slapped by a belt. They're always fresh ones, huh? ;)

I'm so cheap I have a lot of old belts I haven't used hanging around and once in a while when I get caught short of my prefered belts I use one of them. I suspect it might have something to do with old adhesive, and every time I put one of the old ones on there I'm ready for anything...

I hope you heal fast buddy! And I'm glad it wasn't any worse than it was. It would suck to have real damage to one of your machines!

Glad to hear you are okay after a funky incident like that, Mike. Being a mechanic my whole life, I've seen some wierd stuff happen. Sometimes a potentially-dangerous condition begins to develop so slowly over time, you don't even notice any difference or hear anything different in teh way the machine runs until disaster strikes.

Why are you trying to change so late in life ????? You OLE DOG YOU!!!!! :D

I have a very old friend in knifemaking, Don Norton. Don told me about the time that he was working in his one car garage and a steel drive wheel came off of his grinder. Spinning at 3600, it hit the floor, climbed up the wall, across the ceiling, down the wall, across the floor, up the wall, across the ceiling, down the wall, and did this circuit again. Meanwhile, he was trapped in the fray, wanting to escape but avoiding the spinning piece of steel. I laughed out loud at the picture in my mind...
Just an opinion, but I wouldn't put any material on the shaft or hub center or key of your rig. You'll have way too much trouble and possible galling when you remove it (and eventually you will). Mechanics practice is to clean the entire affair like you could eat off it, put a drop of Locktite 242 on the set screw thread, assemble, tighten, and check once a year, but I'll bet you'll never have that problem again!

Yes, there be a lot of kinetic energy in a 2-4 pound chunk of aluminum spinning off a shaft at 3650RPM! I've got a bruised area on my shin about 4x6" today! Apparently I must'a jerked a disc in my back playing "dodge-belt", too. It's hell getting old. LOL

That old Bader2's been pissed at me since I set up the KMG next to it, so I guess this was payback! ;)

If nothing else, I hope this made some folks go check the set screws on their grinders! :D
