I'm looking for a not-too-expensive, less than 3" fixed
blade, and am looking for suggestions.

Anyone have experience with Izula?

Any other suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks

The Becker Necker fits the bill, and are pretty cheap. The Becker BRAT is even better, but i dont think theyre out yet. And how about Bokers new Prymate:

Comes in a mini version too. Dosent get any stouter than this. The big one has a 7mm thick blade. Dont know the price yet, but im guessing theyre abit too expensive for you.

Theres tons and tons of opinions on the Izula. Do a Google of BF search. Youll find that almost all reviews are positive.

the Izula is great.
I'm also pretty happy with my CRKT stubby razel.
Nothing wrong with the Becker Necker, either.

I went to a gun show recently, and had a chance to handle a Blind Horse Knives Patch knife. Those are definitely short and stout and I believe the price was right around $65.

My bro-in law ended up with one of their "apprentice" knives which looked just like the Patch Knife but had FFG and was even thicker at around 3/16"! It's a little beast of a fixed blade.

Bark River makes a bunch of short stout fixed blades.

The Imp comes to mind.

That BHK Patch Knife sure is a nice one. I picked up a used one with maple burl handle, and it's a beauty. However, since it's a bit on the thicker side, it doesn't get used as much as my Buck Paklite Caper.

OP, if you're interested, I'd be willing to pass this little guy over with a discount.

Bark River Huntsman has 3.25" blade that is .185" thick A2 stock.
OAL=6.875"

As mentioned by Big Mike, many short blade BRK&Ts avail for consideration.
Another one that has received many favorable revies is the woodland spcl.
Similar dimensions to Huntsman, but A2 stock is .145" thick instead of .185".
Wide selection of handles from BRK&T, this one forest green micarta.

Now if those are TOO BIG, hereza 2" blade, 5"OAL Brusletto balder for about $20.
If you don't like it...well, it should fit quite snugly in your mother in law's airport luggage. :D

This is right up Johns alley at JK Knives. He excells at short stout knives.

I have an izula, its a great knife. However, I think the coating on it makes it tougher to go through wood than a Bark River necker would be. I also think the bark river's convex grind is much better for working with wood, when it comes to ease of cutting.

Fallkniven WM1 - solid 2.8" VG10 blade is very stout at 3mm (just under 1/8") thick. Price would run just north of a 100 bucks I believe. Also available in laminated 3G for an added premium on price.

As suggested, many Bark River knives may also fit the bill, ProScalpel, Imp, PSK, Micro Canadian, Mini Canadian, Bumble Bee, although I believe most of these would have a bit thinner blade.

These three are pretty popular....

Becker with cordwrap and jimping, Izula with cutting surface stripped clean, Bravo with optional handle scales...

Becker Neckers the most affordable, BRKT Bravo is the nicest, the Izula somewhere in between.
