Short survival machete ****Large pics****

I'd still go with removing the rear "guard" on the top. I just got pointed to the thread and that was my first thought one page one and on page six.

Other than that, not my type of thing to make - which is no sort of criticism. But my take on it if I was provided this with a customer design would be to extend the serrated back further up, making it longer, and minimize the dead space near the handle. And, of course, if I was doing it in 1/4 inch I'd run to a convex grind. But everyone knows I am the convex mafia.

I spent a couple of years in French Guyana, and I did plenty of "missions" in the selva (the south american jungle). Using a machete was a matter of survival there. I tell you that just so you know that I see this tool from a user point of view much more then from a maker's one.
When it comes to tools that you have to trust with your life: KISS (keep it stupid simple). A rope cutter? Looks cool. But if there's a rope to cut, just use the edge of your blade. A jigsaw? Use the edge of your blade. I'd put my effort into making the machete functional. You don't get any points for good design when you're in the woods. But you'll get some for functionality. A guard is always a good idea, a D guard would be even better ( you woun't believe it, but I would've loved a cutlass style on a machete. Just to protect your hand from having contact with some nasty plants).
