Shot Show 2018

SEGA Master System is equivalent to NES, so an 8-bit console. I had one back in the days.

Kind of ruins your comparison. :p

I know it does. (That’s why I said we would have to pretend master system didn’t exist for it to rmeain valid)

Apparently my comparison was invalid anyway. It was based on speculation I read from zknives.com. It seems that the generations are compared across the different companies according to what mo2 posted.

Still, though, mo2's post was talking about particle size differences on the order of 10ths of millimeters, and even then I assume they're referring to average particle size. I think you'd need to be testing on a microscopic scale to see any variation in the steel brands. Maybe the guys who make knives for electronic microscopy dissection care - I don't think we should.

A common misconception. When they say Bohler’s is 3rd gen vs the 2nd gen of the 20cv it is not an apples to apples comparison. It is only 3rd gen Bohler technology, 20cv is 2nd gen Crucible tech.

What that means is that Crucible’s 2nd gen technology could be equivilent to Bohler’s 3rd gen. The generations are only being measured in each company not across the board.

I've heard this topic addressed many times, but never heard a believable answer till now. Thanks for clearing that up, Lapedog!

Shorttime, if you're gonna steal Coltelleria Collini's image, at least don't deprive them of their credit.

I would like to give them credit for the image, especially since I think it was an exclusive offering.

But if Coltelleria isn't a BF sponsor, then I would be technically shilling.

So, credit to Coltelleria Collini for the image of the Primitivo. Unless they're not a Bladeforums' sponsored vendor, in which case, I won't give them credit, so as to follow the rules.

You're only a shill ("an accomplice…who acts as an enthusiastic customer") if you have a relationship with them.

Anyway if you have to choose between copyright infringement and shilling, that's quite the pickle! :D

Eh. Wouldn't be the first Kobayashi Maru I've gotten myself into. Happens pretty regularly, actually.

It's discontinued, so there's not much chance of Coltelleria being upset. I give them credit for trying to make steel look like knapped obsidian.

Since SHOT is over and we've all had our fun, I thought of a different use for this thread.

As we buy the new knives that we saw from SHOT, this could be a place to post brief reviews and first impressions, if anybody is interested.

Or not....

I am suprised at how many are using D2. Whats old is new.
Fine with me.

D2 is easier to work with for manufacturers and custom knife makers and offers a good compromise in many situations. Less wear on equipment and grinders. Keeps the cost down. Outside of corrosion resistance, D2 with a good heat treatment is only marginally less than a steel like S30V in terms of performance, edge retention etc.

You don't need to sell me on D2 it has been a favorite of mine for a long time.
Still your statement is confusing.
Easer to work & less wear compared to what?
Less corrosion resistance compared to what.
Regardless of the steel a good heat treat is a must.
I'm just glad it is coming back in style.
Edit : typo.

My apologies if this was already brought up:

Hogue's HK line... so Benchmade produced the OTF-auto Turmoil and also put the Axis-lock on a couple of models. Now that Hogue has "exclusive rights" to H&K knives, I see a revised Turmoil, the Hadron, and an Axis-lock Hogue/HK, the Exemplar? Of course it is not called the "axis-lock", they call it a "pivot lock". Is this a sign of things to come?
