Should I buy the Manix or save for a large Sebenza?

Sharpmaker,
If your screen-name gives any insight into your choice of knife companies...... :D In all seriousness, that's a darn tough one! Both knives you mentioned are users all the way and are of excellent quality. Both companies are great companies, founded and run by great men. However, you can buy two Manii (plural of Manix, I think :D ) for what you'd spend on one Sebbie.

The Manix is my favorite knife, so I'm a little swayed in the advice I'll give. I don't think the Sebbie holds a candle to the Manix in terms of hard-use. The Manix's lock appears more reliable than the Seb's. The ergos on the Manix blow the Sebbie away. The Manix is truly ambidexterous, whereas the Sebbie is not. The only advantages I can see of buying the Sebbie over the Manix would be it's lighter weight and better re-sale value. But, if you're planning to use your knife, and use it hard, go with the Manix. I don't think you'll be sorry!

Either way you decide to go, good luck! :)

Sebenza all the way-you will not regret passing up the Manix, or just about any other folder for that matter.

These rumors about the Manix's lock being stronger than the custom fitted lock on the Sebbie are hogwash in my opinion-I would like to see it proven!

For the price the Manix is a very good piece of equiptment but why not just get the best to start with? I wish I would have.

I believe I said that the Manix's lock "APPEARS MORE RELIABLE" than the Seb's, did I not? ;)

But, since you were so kind as to assert that you don't believe that the Manix's lock (which is also "custom fitted", BTW) isn't stronger that the Sebbie's, I'll play along. Believe it or not, a lock-back (front-lock, what have you), IS much more reliable, and stronger, than a frame-lock or liner-lock. This has been proven time and time again!

If you want to "see it proven", go out to Golden, Colorado sometime and hang with Sal when he's breaking locks. Be sure to read Cliff Stamp's upcoming review of the Manix. :)

I have both :D - The large Sebenza is a much smaller and thinner package. I use/carry my Sebenza in urban environments, and the Manix in the outdoor. (when I can't carry a fixed blade like a Fallkniven F1)

by all means, get both eventually. but for the love of pizza, drop the hundred & change for the manix ASAP. i was faced with an identical dilemma. i was ruminating for months over getting the sebenza due to its well-deserved acclaim. i finally got a chance to fondle one, & was ready & set to get one -- until i got a chance to check out the manix. then it basically was curtains for the sebbie. i mean, it was OVER. the manix has a much more ergonomically correct handle, has much more guard sweep to protect against that beefy blade. it feels much better & more secure in hand than the seb, or pretty much any other folder you'll touch. it goes without saying that the locking mechanism is as tough as it gets (it's been tested beyond brutally & passed with flying colors). in terms of fit & finish, you won't find any flaws. all this for less than 1/3 of the seb's price.. this one is a no-brainer: get the manix.

I didn't want to leave anyone with the impression that I am Sebenza-bashing, as I am not. I own two of them and admire their versatility, beauty, and performance. I'm just on a Manix trip right now. I just bought my second and can't get over their functionality and rock-solid feel. :)

Both knives cut. However, there are two good reasons to get the spyderco. First, it's better looking..."don't buy no ugly knife." Second, if you truly are going to use the knife, it'll hurt a lot less to lose or scratch up the spyerco than the sebenza. Spend the big bucks later, on something that has more eye appeal than a sebenza.

From time to time I play this little game. What folder would I choose if I could only own one ?

My uses would be EDC,work (fireman),self defense and hunting.

Two days ago my answer came by ups. MANIX.

I also have both, and they're both outstanding knives. Get the Manix now and then save for a large Sebenza. :D Both knives will be around for a long time, so whichever one you don't get now will certainly be available when you're ready to buy it.

I don't know whether Sharpmaker is Vinny. Unearth, however is Vinny for sure.

Buy 3 manix (for the price of a sebbie), then you won't need another folder, ever.

Save your money for a large Classic sebenza with some type of wood inlays. You won't be sorry!
