Since this is a recent topic, you folks tell me what you'd do.

I ordered a knife from a maker in 2002 and never had any further conversation with him. Well, we spoke once or twice and I was told "soon", that would have been in '03. We have a mutual friend that kept asking about my knife and finally in 2007 the project seemed to take life, well maybe a little.

Move forward to Feb 2008 and now we're cooking. Knife is forged, I saw picture! End of Feb I send the maker handle material. Yippee!! Last conversation was probably 2/26 or so and I'm told three to four weeks. Well it's been 8 and I'm not a happy camper.

Maker tells another maker that I should give him a call. Duh, can't pick up the phone, can't leave an e-mail yourself. I'm not chasing any maker to get a freakin' knife!

So, what say you?

Win

I voted cancel and move on. It already seems the whole thing has irked you , so how much enjoyment will you get from the knife after all the run around ?

Sure , you could call.... but you may just end up getting told " soon "...or " really soon " and end up more frustrated.

The circumstances being whatever they are, one thing is for sure. This maker has absolutely no regard for you as a customer. Along the way, he could have called, emailed, told you he might not get to it for ANOTHER 6 YEARS, etc......Therefore, I think the ball is in your court and ethically, you can do whatever you want. I would not want to own a knife made by a person like that. I'd tell him to "stick it".

Hi Win,

Any particular reason that you want to give this maker you money?

Pick another maker and have them make the knife.

If it was a knife that I really wanted, I would call the maker. If I had gotten a bad taste in my mouth, I would cancel.

End of Feb I send the maker handle material.

Win

Have you paid him anything yet ? I hope not..........

I voted to call him......... I am not quite sure what I would say...... but it probably would not be too pleasant...... :D

At least get your handle material back........ maybe it will be attached to the knife........:D

Sorry for your trouble though....... this sounds like a sad situation.

Care to give details of who it is so some others of us don't get the shaft cause we don't know......

Win, I'd say you are about 4 years past due for cancellation, but now you have handle material out also. Unless the handle material is very precious to you, I'd write this guy off, but I would not call. If he ever does get the knife ready for delivery, tell him at that time where to stick it.
This, of course, assumes you did not put a deposit up along with the handle material.

Paul

Win, as you know, it can be a game of patience in dealing with some. You don't mention the maker declaring a time frame from the get-go. You held on over the years (like Paul said, cancellation could have come long ago) and there is now a forged blade and you have sent handle material. A comment was made through hear-say. But, you haven't communicated, no matter who calls who. I would make one more call and if not satisfied with the discussion, make my decision then. You have to call to cancel anyway.

I have been through a few where patience was needed, and it paid off. If it becomes a pissing contest, it should end.

Tough situation to say the least.

You're a much more patient person than I am!

I got antsy a little while ago when my $50 knife took a few weeks longer to ship...I can't imagine being disrespected by someone that is asking for a lot of your money...

If you do call, I'd be very curious to hear what the maker had to say.

What duration of time did the maker quote at time of order?
Has the maker been filling other customer's orders?
Is the order a typical knife for the maker or something more obscure?

Trying to figure out why a maker would demonstrate such unprofessional behavior. I know you are a straight shooter so it's confusing.

Well, presumably you're going to have to call him anyway if you want to cancel, so I'd call and see what the status is. If you don't get a satisfactory answer, then you can cancel. You could also give a deadline - if I don't get the finished knife by September 1 (or whatever) then I'm not going to pay for it. Often, deadlines light a fire under people's butts. Otherwise, you may wait another 3 years for the handle to come together.

Presumably there's a reason why you waited 5 years with minimal progress. If it's from a big-name maker with a multi-year waiting list, a bit more waiting will probably pay off.

Like it has been said before, you would have to make the call to cancel, why not get status and light a fire under him by giving him a dead line, men work best under pressure. What do you have to loose beside some phone time?
Just my .02,
No change required.
James

My vote is for calling him. If he is whom I think he is, you're already used to his personality.

patience is a virtue.

You've waited this long... call him, see what he says, and get it finished or canceled.

Your phone call is long overdue! Make the call soon!

Make sure that there is no misunderstanding about the handle
material, and if things do not end with a happy note, maybe send
him the link to this thread......

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Win,
I think that making a phone call would at least give you some insight into the current situation.

As others said, making the decision to cancel may depend on if you had put a deposit on the knife and the value to you of the handle material.

Hope it works out to your satisfaction,
Peter

I personally would not wait 8 years on any custom knife. There are too many good makes out there that are serious about their sales and would get their knife to you within the year.,,,VWB.

Win---I'm in the same boat. After a two year wait, I called and was told the knife was almost ready. Two months later, no knife. I don't want to cancel and loose my $200. DP. I can't afford to do that. I'll wait ONE more month and then ask, What the heck is going on. Good luck, too.
