Should I get a 119 or a Nighthawk?

For my first fixed blade Buck I'm considering a 119 or a Nighthawk. I would use it for hiking, hunting, stabbing spam cans, and general pillock adventures. ;) Which one should I get and why? I can get a 119 for $35 or the Nighthawk for $40. With the Nighthawk I'd probably 'need' an aftermarket sheath like Goose has. How is the sheath on the 119?

I prefer the 119 since it's just more classic.

Besides that, I think it's a tough choice. I haven't used either so can't comment on performance.

Well Messy,

It's a personal choise that only you can answer. I don't currently own a Nighthawk so I can't comment on them...everyone who has them states they are a tuff knife. I like the 119 and own one; it's a perfect fixed blade for just about anything. So my point is you can't go wrong with ether one...IMHO. That said....if your pillocking knife use is extream you may want to go with the NH....it may take it better than the 119. However, if I were you I'd buy one of each.

Do the Wal Mart 119's have a nylon sheath? It's hard to tell from the PICTURE of the knive in their knife case. And I didn't have the patience to wait long enough for an employee to notice me at the counter. :jerkit:

I prefer the Nighthawk as an excellent tool. But the Special looks a lot more valuable, especially the model with the wooden handle.

The 119 is better for digging out my arrowheads out of the tree, that alway jumps into the flight path of my arrows. The knife point of the 119 is more solid the the Nighthawk's.

Best regards,
Haebbie

As a utility user I would go NightHawk. For ceremonial use at weddings, parades, commissioning, or barmitzvahs....go 119BR.
If I was going to really need a user FB knife and had to choose one of those, it would be my NightHawk for certain.
And yes, the WW 119 clampack comes with the genuine corinthian nylon sheath.
Carne Asada...

Now see Goose, this is where you and I part company. :( I would choose the 119 as a utility user, since it is a great all around knife. For weddings, funerals, commissionings or change of command functions, I would use either the 120 or my particular favorite, the 124! The key is that one must always make a statement at special functions and nothing says "Don't F*** with me" better that the 120 or the 124! :D  :D

I agree with Mike. Oh, my pick for the barmitzvahs would be the Buck Scimitar:thumbup:

There is one thing that recommends the 119 over the Nighthawk and that is that the 119, being so nice and all, is part of a large series of 100 model fixed blade knives and may just get you going on another collection of like knives. The 119 will look real nice with a 102, 105, 118, 120 and 121. The Nighthawk will always be an odd man out in your collection.
My 119 has just come back from the Northwest Territories. A buddy was going up there to do some photography and wanted something to wave in the face of polar bears. I loaned it to him. I figured the mojo would do the knife good and if it made him feel safer well ok. I did point out that if the polar bear cared to see him as lunch the 119 wasn’t going to make much of a dif. But he took it and said it would give him some confidence so that’s fine. He is back south and the polar bears continue to starve to death because of global warming. I’m not so sure it made a difference to the knifes mojo but it sure didn’t hurt.

Mike...you had me at 'hello' and ya ain't losing me that easy.
I started to mention my 890 BSrider as 'THE' camp knife for me. But he wanted to choose between the 119 and a 650, So, that's like having to choose Ginger or Mrs. Howell w/o Mary Ann in the equation. So...I agree 100% with your view. Neener neener neener. ;)
And yes, for a brisk (however ya spell it)....maybe a Scrimtar or a Buck Tool :)

I didn't see anyone say get'em both...so I'll say it GET'EM BOTH:p :D :p. If they're going to be users, buy used...if'n your not in a big hurry...you could get both for just a little more than one...JMHO. Good Luck, Preston

If you want I can send you a pic of a home made arrow puller my dad made for me about 15 years ago.
Just send me an e-mail

I agree with JB4570, get both :D
I have one of each, they both have their strong points LOL :D
The 119 is a classic, and cuts very nice, But the nighthawk is a beefy durable blade, I also like the handle shape and grip better on the nighthawk.
If you plan to use it nither is a collector so either way, it depends on you!
Classic, or heavy use and abuse?
Also the nighthawk can be collectible there is no reason it has to be the odd man out! Collect all the different variations of them or have a "tacticool" Buck knife display, i can think of about 2 dozen Bucks knives that would fit the bill!
Good luck and post some comments and pics!

I couldn't post a pic from my cell when I posted earlier.
Here are a few of my 119 knives and my NightHawk.
My favorite 119 is at the top w/ the sheath it rides in.
Immediately below is the NightHawk and its' sheath (not Buck).

The NightHawk is the one I would take if I had to choose "just one".

Nighhawk is more robust of the two.
But if you compare handlewise, the 119 (handle material being Micarta) certainly would outlast the Nighthawk - just you see! So, get the Special too.
