Should I get a Buck 110?

If you have any complaints with it, I've heard that Buck has excellent warranty/customer service.

Good choice!

Here's a little teaser till yours arrives...

Good choice I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how nice a knife it is for the price. Use the "Heck" out of it.

OK guys you were all correct!! Got my 110 in the mail last friday and I LOVE it! Its such a beast of a knife and just looks bad ass in the hand:D The grind is a little bit off on the one I got but about 20mins on a Lansky straightened it right out and now this blade is as dangerous as it looks! I also had to spend some time with a file knocking down the pin in the spring because it was sticking out a bit further than I would have liked. I wasnt expecting this thing to come in perfectly finished so no problems there but man is this a pretty knife. I have a background in history and museum studies so the first thing I thought of when i was playing with the 110 was the caption that would be next to it in a museum ["Buck 110" American man's folding hunter knife, Mid to Late 20th century] so classic. I even like how huge and heavy it is. Im 6'5" and have big ol' bear paws and this bad boy still looks big in my mits:D And bonus: it fits perfectly next to my wallet in the back pocket of my jeans!
Thanks for the good advice everybody! This really is a classic and Im glad I have one now.

Brian, everybody should have a Buck 110. They are that good and an icon of American Knifemaking. They were, for I don't know how long, THE knife that everybody carried. That black leather pouch was on the belt of every working man in America. You don't see it so much around here. The clip knife seems to have supplanted it.

I have one of the 1978 or 79 models that is squared off and was made of, I believe, 440C. The new ones are more rounded and are made of very good, and well heat treated, 420HC. I don't know if they make the 110 in like S30V or not...they make some of their knives in S30V as special models or whatever.

I guess I'll be the lone voice of dissent. I don't own a 110 and I have no desire to buy one. In fact, my local Walmart recently had them on clearance for $24 and I passed.

I feel about them the same way I feel about Zippos and 1911s. They were fine for their time but are outdated and have been surpassed by newer, lighter, better performing designs.

Is the Buck 110 still worth getting?

Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: Order a CKS version with S30V blade. Buck does 420HC as good as anyone, but the 440C was much better. Now they offer S30V with a fantastic heat treat, and it is well worth the extra cost.

That is true for 99% of people, but for the 1% who can appreciate the difference and need the reliability and specific performance characteristics, sometimes the old-fashioned designs prove themselves to be superior. That is true of the 1911, which is the sidearm favored by the FBI Hostage Rescue Team and military Special Operations, despite the extra weight and reduced number of rounds. Those folks demand reliability and accuracy. It is true of the Zippo, which is favored by real smokers like me; I certainly favor the wind resistance, excellent flint mechanism, and ruggedness over a cheaper Bic-style lighter, despite the foul-smelling lighter fluid and the constant refilling. I smoke, and I carry a Zippo because know that I will get a light for my smoke anywhere, anytime, even in the driving wind. And it is true of the 110, which is still the go-to hunting knife for many an amateur and professional sportsman who appreciate the heft, simplicity, and solid lockback design.

The new stuff is indeed a positive development and good because it's lighter, easier to use and maintain, and generally cheaper. But there is still a place for the old stuff among the hard-core who demand reliable performance and ruggedness and are willing to deal with the weight, cost, and maintenance of the old-timey designs.

I have several folders from several makers. Some many times more expensive than the 110. But, it's always the 110 that gets by far the most carry time in the field. The blade length and shape works well for me on game. As far as weight goes, I weigh 4,240 ounces, so I don't really notice the additional 7.2 ounces.

Ooh. Ooh. They make a buck 110 in S30V??? Holy Crap  there just aren't enough smilies to express how that makes me feel.

I have to get a 110 someday. I do own a Puma "knockoff" from 1980 which is very nice, heavy, beautiful, and pointy like the 110, but there is something about owning the original. The 110 is an iconic artifact of its era and still a fine practical tool today. 110's have probably skinned more deer than any other folding knife in history.

I take it you don't have much experience with the modern 1911 platform.

One of the most trusted and reliable handguns available.

Only in the pistol classes I teach and the IDPA matches I help run.

The 1911 platform makes up about 20% of the guns I see in action, yet they account for over 80% of the total malfunctions.

OK MR. Glock, I guess that's why most of my Law Enforcement friends prefer the 1911 platform.

Fan-boys show up everywhere.
