Should I get an Opinel?

I've had this question for a while too, as I don't own an Opinel. The only one I have seen in person is at Sportsmans Warehouse actually, and it's been branded on the woods by Coghlans (packaged and sold by them).

It's a #7. Does anyone have/carry this model? Just wondering if they felt it was up to daily/woods carry.

Ultraman the opinels are a great buy. A good blade for the $$. I prefer not to use it though as an everyday carry but it still finds a place in my outdoor gear especially my tackle box...and I take fishing very seriously!

Spooky Pistolero I have that particular brand that you speak of and it has functioned well. I have used the opinell to clean and gut fish and whittle. It is up to the task. The only thing for me is that I am not use to taking the extra seconds to open the knife and turn the band to secure say for an EDC...but then again for woods duties it is dependable.

The #8 is most popular model that Opinel makes for edc.
I have all the models, small to Very Large, and find that the #9 & #10 my favorites when in the woods. I am sure though different op's for different folks:)

All this over a $8.00 knife .....

I'll probably get one, but that's the thing , the shipping is probably as much as the knife! However, I'm sold on it...this product's value is obviously more than its apparent monetary worth so I find nothing wrong with reading words of praise about Opinels :D Antibiotics can end up costing only a couple of bucks but it can save your life :D

Here is a No 6 and a No 8. The 6 has been my edc for the past month or so.

I sanded the handles and drilled 1/4" holes for brass tube. Put a little dent in the handle to make it easier to grab the nail nick. A couple coats of watco oil finished the job.

I have one. First thing I did was sand the handles down and put a red oak finish on them with a half dozen coats of tung oil. she's all sorta perty now...

I also pulled the blade out and sanded the pivot area a little. Blade is still plenty tight, but now easy to open when wet.

Daily and woods carry? definitely, though I would never consider it a primary knife for camping. Opinels and Douk Douks have a level of sharpness that make just about every tactical you've ever seen look down right silly, and they're easy to resharpen on simple every day materials. coffee cups, backs of other knifes, cardboard, river rocks, etc.

BTW, since it's design is all edge and handle it's actually alot of blade for its size. it has as much cutting edge as most 4" blades due to the lack of a ricasso.

Well, actually it was because the gentleman asked a question, and quite a few people had answers. If you have nothing to add that actually addresses his question, why bring your particular brand of negativity to the thread?

I realize that plently of things have already been said here to convince you to buy an Opinel, and what I would say to you isn't contrary; you should buy one. Great knives. And while you are looking into French knives, I would also recommed checking out two other very popular/interesting brands: Nontron and Laguiole. While thse brands are not quite as cheap, they are both very good, and have interesting history attached to them. (Nontron knives have been in production for over 500 years). I could ramble on, but I'll stop here. Happy hunting!

For years, I carried an Optinel as my backpacking knife.
It is a great food prep knife, as the blade is so thin.

Also for a legal carry for places like England, snap out the retaining ring and you no longer have a lock knife.

I have carried an Opinel and an Okapi for years , the Opinel has a beautiful blade , easy to sharpen , holds an awesome edge .. mine will skin clean and section a medium goat without a hassle , still be shaving sharp when its done .
I personaly have a #10 , my girls have each got a #8 on their belts , with the neato Opinel pouch with the mini steel ..

My personal one is kinda well worn in , and flick open easily , I can open it and lock the blade with one hand not a problem :)

I have managed to roll the edge on it a couple times tho , doing things I spose I shouldnt have .... whittling an axe handle down to size and silly things like that but for ordinary work , even hunting duty , they are a pretty good knife .

there are things I do that are brutal to an opinel blade , this is where Okapi blades come into their own :) , but not everyone drills holes in sea shells and similar things wth their knives ... just nutters like me

Spooky and Bus, I was introduced to Opinels several years ago by a friend who gave me a well used #7 he had bought for next to nothing at a flea market. It had been used by either a farmer or one of his field hands because it was packed full of clay dirt and had been sharpened plenty. But it was still serviceable, very serviceable! I cleaned it out with a toothbrush under running water, let it dry for a week, then coated it with gunstock finish. It's an excellent size for every day pocket carry.

Dr,Mudd Right on!
That kinda sounds like how I found my Missus of some 38 years :D serviceable, very serviceable!

Sorry for my inappropraite comment. It was failed attempt at humor to go with your joke about the perfume and stuff. I didn't mean to offend. This stuff runs rampant on my usually forum sight and I am just to used to recieving and giving these kinds of jabs and it wasn't an attempt at trolling.

Forgery is not funny. It's about the worst thing you can do on the net.

Just because someone else acts like a dork doesn't mean you should act like a dork too.

The No. 8 garden knife is a nice design. Mine is inox. I sometimes carry a No. 6 as a pocket knife, and it also makes a great steak knife. In my experience, the ebay sellers with good ratings have been safe to deal with.
