Should I return this new knife?

So I just bought a Kershaw shuffle 3800. It's the second pocket knife I've ever owned and the first one I bought myself. I just got it yesterday from Walmart and have been flipping it open and closed and used it to cut some string. I didn't notice if it was like this when I got it, but the knife now looks like this:

Should I return it and get a new one? Send the pics to Kershaw? Get a refund and find something else ($15)? Just use the knife as is? I don't know what's normal with pocket knives yet. Any help is appreciated.

If it were me I would return it. Kershaw/Kai is hardly the only company that markets Chinese knives in the lower end product lines but there is a higher quality risk, and the company has to take responsibility for it. Actually I would return it and pay a bit more for a Blur.

The blur is out of my price range and too long. I need something cheaper and shorter. The reason I got this instead of the spyderco ambitious was the price. I suppose that's what I get for buying cheap. Do you have any other recommendations? I need something with a blade no longer than 2.5 inches, and something under $40 would be nice. I absolutely cannot go above $100.

Before returning try tightening the pivot.
Had same thing happen with a lower end CRKT......flip it a few times, pivot loosens and centering is off.

Yeah looks like your pivot is pretty loose. Could be me, but I don't think the shuffle is meant to be flipped open. I have one and the blade was off center shortly after getting it. Tightened the pivot a little and it is centered now. But it is kinda stiff. I never really thought of it as something I would try to flip open though.

I don't think that scratched up area on the tang looks right. I think that's the tang?

I'd try and return it and get another one. I've had a couple of different Shuffles. Cool knives for the price!

I think I might shell out and get a spyderco dragonfly 2 (vg10) for $50. It seems to be a lot of people's favorite knife ever and seems like it should last longer and have less quality problems. The scratched tang bothers me more than it being of-center, especially since it looks like the liner lock is eating away at it. I've been opening and closing it more and I think the scratched area is getting worse.

Shuffle is a decent little knife, but like with anything "production" level, every now and again something gets missed by QC and a dud hits shelves... Walmart being the mega super store that they are, buying the sheer bulk that they do, ups the odds of them having one of said duds on their shelf.
I'd say take it back to Walmart and simply exchange it for another, and check out the new one before taking it home. I had two shuffles, one I gave to my 16 year old, another I gave away to a board member here last month, neither had issues that I took notice to, so chances are it was simply a fluke...

The Scallion is a decent option as well, or a CRKT (small) Pazoda...

WELCOME to the forums!

Take it back and exchange it. Inspect the new one before buying it.

The Dragonfly would be an excellent upgrade. But there's nothing wrong with the Shuffle.

Use it and later, when the bug bites (and it will), then get the DF.

So I went ahead and bought the dragonfly, however, I'm going to exchange the shuffle and keep the new one. My rationale is that it's a cheaper knife with softer steel that I can use to practice sharpening.
So far my sharpening has been limited to putting an edge on a completely dull old pocket knife and I want more practice (that knife was from my grandma so I don't want to ruin it).
Thank you all for your suggestions. I'll make sure the new shuffle gets plenty of use.

I'd exchange it. I just picked up a Shuffle about a week ago. No problems with it. Nice little knife.

Look at the Spyderco Cat, Has a 440C blade as usual from Spyderco, good fit and finish. Their Byrd line is another possibility. Had a Tern for awhile, but gave it to my son in law (he needed a decent pocket knife and I happened to be carrying it that day).

I'd return it. If that scratching is on the tang, it could affect the stability of your lock up.

For another cheap Kershaw alternative, take a look at the Amplitude 2.5. Blade size is right what you're looking for in a sturdy steel, assisted open frame lock package. Slender little knife too, really disappears in the pocket. Can be found for around $25. If you're looking for the multi-tool feel of the Shuffle, consider a SAK Alox.

Any tips on tightening the pivot screw? I only have one torx bit and the thing just spins with nothing to hold the other side.

I would recommend using Kershaw's warranty service before attempting any repairs yourself.

To tighten the pivot you will need two torx drivers. Go slow, as the screw may be bottomed out already if the whole pivot spins. You don't want to over tighten and strip the screw.

You can get a Kershaw link very nice flipper great drop point blade and gfn handle I love it as a lower end edc and it's made in the USA I think I paid 35 bucks for mine

The dragonfly arrived and all I can say is: wow. Definitely going to exchange and use the new shuffle as the 'beater' and try to keep the dragonfly with the original edge until I'm good enough to sharpen it back up well enough.
Thank you all for your suggestions. I've written them down and will keep them in mind for when I'm ready to get something new.

So I return the shuffle at one end of Walmart, get a gift card with the 15.73 on it, and walk to the other end of the store where the knives are, and find out that they are out of shuffles. I looked at some of the other knives but none of them grabbed me. It seems the universe wants me to just stick with the dragonfly. If I see a shuffle in Walmart again, I might pick one up. Until then, I'm shuffl-less.

The dragonfly is a great little knife

Boker Nano and Spyderco DF2 both have a ton of personality for little one handers.
