I never thought the day would come where I would see this question actually being asked. Wow.

Using "gift" is theft of PP's services, and really stupid on top of that.
Never understood why BF is complacent on allowing to defraud PayPal in the for sale ads?
I buy the way I sell! Everything is straight up and everyone gets their cut. No funny business. Yep, even the government and paypal get their cuts.
it makes my life simpler and its easier to sleep at night.:applause:
The OP, has been a member here, since 2012...I don't mean to be rude, but this thread, by someone who supposedly has been here for 3 years, qualifies as a "NO BRAINER!"
I honestly believe, that your only reason for starting this thread, was to vent over the knife that you didn't get. Regardless, at least you had the good judgment, not to pay, via the F&F.

Actually, I've never really been active in the knife community untill I had some time this year (recovering from a surgery) and enjoying getting into the hobby and learning the ropes. I didn't "not get the knife", I passed on it and not bummed in the least...and it is still available. I was simply remiss that the seller was initially very obstinate about accepting anything other than "gift option", declaring that his solid rep should suffice and even AFTER I shared PayPal's official policy of 2.9% + 30¢, he still did not want to do the deal for that amount, nor even the +4% that he initially requested...and this on a $500-range knife!? I am planning on purchasing that very knife brand new this week and gladly paying full retail. I was just wanting some feedback on the matter, and am stoked on what's been contributed. I've actually appreciated the ad style I've seen from you Kelama.
As far as I am concerned, anyone that expects the buyer to cough up an extra percentage isn't worth dealing with, especially 4%. Someone insisting that "Gift Only" option needs to be ignored.
So I'm pretty new on here, but I've been enjoying this community and have been blown away by some of the kindness and brotherhood I've seen and experienced! One thing I'd like help understanding is the option to abuse PayPal and use Friends & Family when I'm clearly not FF with strangers on a forum buying luxury items. Today I tried to purchase a knife for $485 from a gentleman who's ad states that he'd prefer to be paid via Friends and Family, OR have 4% added (even though PayPal's fees are 2.9% + $0.30). When I told him that I'd gladly pay $500, he got very defensive about his perfect feedback rating, and insisted that PayPal would take way too big a chunk from him, and that I should pay him via FF option. I told him that though I respect his great rating, I'm not willing to send that amount FF. He then said, "ok fine, I'll accept $510". I'm over it, as he clearly doesn't really want to sell the knife that badly, and I'm struggling to understand arguing over a few bucks at that price point anyhow.
I'd like some input about this whole business please. The sticky's posted by the mods are abundantly clear about NOT using PayPal's FF option, as it's not only dishonest, but also avoids conflicts. Why then are 50%-ish of the ads I see openly asking to be paid FF, or to add XX% to the price to use Goods & Services? I am missing something? If we are so blessed that we can buy knifes that cost hundreds of dollars, why are people so worried about a few pennies?? What am I missing here?![]()
Turn over everything you have regarding this sale to PAY PAL. Hopefully, they'll dump his butt and not let him use PAY PAL anymore.
While I respectfully disagree(and will explain in the second portion for discussion purposes), I will change to the so called keep it simple method with all fees and charges include. The purpose of any sales ad is not to antagonize customers and right or wrong enough seem to be offended by price + PP fee to make it a foolish method. As I stated earlier I used that method but keep it simple is no harder to use. The change will be made and thanks to those that contributed to this.
Now for the disagreement part.
A. I think people are focusing on the wrong number. The number to focus on is the final number you pay. If that number is a good deal you should buy, if not don't buy. It doesn't make any difference on how it is broken down. There is nothing inherent to the keep it simple method that says the fees are not in the price(or the best price) and if they rounded up to the next $5, you could be paying the highest fees of all.
Example(exaggerated) a BNIB Sebenza priced at $150 with added 100% fees($300) is a better deal than $400 keep it simple. It's what you pay in the end that matters.
B. (and this falls more into opinion) I am not Pay Pals biggest fan. I also don't go into a deal if I feel I am at much risk of being ripped off. I am honest and will take back any knife that the buyer isn't happy with. If it is do to a problem with the knife vs just changing of mind I will even pay for the return shipping. With this in mind I feel the PP guarantee is for the buyer and that is who should pay for it. If the buyer has any fear at all that the deal could go sour 3% is very good insurance and I would fully encourage them to use it. My other option is USPS money order-no fees, no gift option. I pay for insurance on the shipment, because that insures me. They pay for PP insurance because that insures them. I am in no hurry so PP gives me no benefit there. I use USPS money orders for my purchases whenever possible. There is a risk, but I take on that risk. If a BF deal with me using USPS money orders went sour I would open a thread so others were aware of the individual for their safety, but would expect nothing of BF or any one else in the help of a recovery. My choice, my problem.
-Only deals that have fallen through over PP fees were those that insisted on paying F&F. Many have failed to pay the fees as agreed and I just let it go with no mention(rest of deal was fine), others I have waived the fees and still others have agreed to split. The fees are too little to loose deals on & never that big a deal to me. I usually am loosing money anyway so what's a little more-
As I said this was for discussion only. I have a couple old sales I will check and adjust to keep it simple if needed. Sorry for the length of this

Trying to profit on top of PayPal's service fee, is as unprofessional, & as greedy as it get's...
these type of seller's, are like that person you know, who always seems to have to leave before the sever brings you the check, or who always seems to have forgotten their wallet.Yeah, that type of person: they're so tight, that their hind end squeaks, when they sneak out the door, knowing they screwed you into paying THEIR tab.
