Should this go back to gec?

If you were going to return it to the seller, you shouldn't have messed with it. But you should absolutely contact the seller and relay your displeasure about the knife's condition not being disclosed accurately.

At this point I would sent it back to GEC and see if they can repair it.

Yea, The seller replied to me and said he is either willing to do a full refund or pay for the warranty costs...I disclosed the facts that there is a light patina and I sharpened it already to him. I would like to go with that option if he doesnt have a problem with it but if he does I will just send it back to gec and he will cover the shipping costs. I just dont want to wait 5 weeks to get my knife back. And I agree, I shouldnt have messed with it. I just thought I was going to keep it and mabye was a bit too excited to have my first gec I didnt look it over enough at first. Next time I get a slippjoint in the mail I'll go over it with a fine tooth comb before I do anything with it.

I can believe the knife left the factory that way, because it has the same issues as several of the GECs I purchased back in the summer of 2010. I was never able to get an answer from the factory, but always suspected someone was selling off "seconds." In the years since then, I've seen a number of GECs but only one or two had anything more than minor gaps (hairline of light at just the right angle), and most of those had seen some use.

If you like the knife, take the option to send it back to GEC.

Send it to GEC. Call them and talk to them first. It is not that hard to send a knife. You can send it priority mail insured for about $6.00. You may have to wait a little while to get it back, but they pay return shipping. The inconvenience of sending it to GEC will go away once you get your knife back; the problems you have will haunt you as long as you own it if you don't.

Somebody pried something with that knife!!
No knife comes out of a modern factory that bad!!
Someone is BS-ing or has BS-ed somebody!!

Thankfully I dont have to send it to gec, the seller aggreed to refund my money, I will be dropping this off at the post office tomorrow :) I'll find another gec with the money I get back, mabye an outlaw

Im really glad the seller is so understanding, I hate dealing with cs.

Glad you got it sorted. Were it me, I'd be having some very direct yet civil words with the seller. No way would I GIVE someone a knife that shoddy, let alone sell it. Sounds like the seller is stepping up, but it still bums me out. THIS (your first NEW trad) was an important knife for you...whether you end up with a dozen traditionals or two hundred, that's a crappy way to start.

In fact, you know what the best way to start this kind of thing is? Someone giving you a knife. PM your address to me. I don't like Stag, so I can't help you there, but I guarantee I can make your foray into traditionals more pleasant.

I sent you a vm, thanks a bunch! The seller is definitely stepping up, and I guess I can believe it was an honest mistake...

Glad to hear the seller was willing to take it back. I just had a similar situation with an older NOS Case, the seller was a gentleman and took the knife back immediately.
Now, what knife are you going to get? The Outlaw you mentioned is a sweetheart of a knife, and the only GEC I bought multiples of just because it is so pocketable. Good luck!

Hmm, Im thinking a north field #73 in red indian paintbrush jigged bone two blade config with a lanyard hole long pulls and nail knicks OR a northfield outlaw jack in cocobolo with slanted and grooved bolsters.....Im having trouble deciding, I might just have to get both! ;) Mabye I'll go with the outlaw first then the #73....what do you think?

Very nice gesture sir

Well everything just turned out dandy with the seller...Got my money refunded, he told me that he didnt want the knife back, I was quite surprised...I guess no one wants a broken knife eh? ;) Im not sure what I'm gonna do with it, maybe i'll get around to sending it back to gec one day, mabye polish up the blade and do a giveaway on here...

You're right. No one wants a broken knife so why would you maybe polish up the blade and do a giveaway on here.........

Just make it a toolbox knife or gardening knife and you'd be ahead.

I meant that I may get around to seeing if gec will fix it up and then do a giveaway, otherwise it will probably just sit on my desk.

Sorry If I misunderstood your post. If tht's the case a giveaway might be in order one day.

A GEC green bone all steel 73 2 blade Scout was my first, and it led to a few more :D including a Northfield Outlaw Jack. Both are sweet knives, and there is a reason the 73 seems to be the most popular GEC. I like the Outlaw just a little more though, I'm a sucker for the gunstock frame.

Now Im thinking I might just go with the outlaw or get the outlaw and a primitive bone powder horn..... I think i'll go with just the outlaw for now, Im also a sucker for a nice gunstock. Besides, the retailer has free shipping on gec knives to US AND Canada, so if I want to I can order another next week without feeling like I spent too much on shipping :p

IMHO, the 73 and 76 are two completely different animals.

To me the gunstock is a 'pocket knife' while the 73's just give off a different feel. If I had to get rid of my 73 or 76 it would likely come down to sentimental reasons as the two fill completely different roles for me. The 76 carries small for so much cutting power. The 73 carries like a much larger overall knife.

The most important to me would be the 73's have a very in line edge with the handle while the 76 has an aggressive downward angle making it great for hooking material into the edge. There are a lot of advantages to the 73's design too. Different beasts, and I could go on, but I won't bore you.

Well, its done. A package from *sa Knives should be coming my way soon with a new coccobolo outlaw jack! :D
