Should We Be Carrying TWO EDCs?

I'm a engineer at a group of TV stations. I carry everything from as small as a SAK or Caly Jr. to as large as a ZT0300 and a Sebenza. I've gotten a few odd looks but, since we are the techies and might be dealing with high voltage / high radiation - they don't understand most of our tools/gear from the onset.

They tend to ignore everything we do as "black magic." They are just glad we keep everything on the air.

By the same token, if a salesperson (acct. exec, whatever) produced the same blade, he might get odd looks and questions.

I guess it is all in context. :o

Has anyone ever had trouble with someone spotting your knife sticking out of your pocket and asking what it is? With some large folders this could be a problem and a hinderance to carry them. For this reason I will not carry a knife that doesn't have a high mounted clip. Everyone of my large edc's have deep pocket clips with a couple having a deep enough clip to put the entire knife in my pocket. With those two most people assume I'm carrying a pen or something. My others only stick out an 1/8 of an inch at the most and I believe since I'm not self concious about the knife, no one else is either.

Only once. There was an ongoing union contract negotiations one place I worked - I was in a non-union consultant/adviser position at that venue. One of the shop stewards loudly squealed like a little girl when he noticed the pocket clip of my EDC extending over the pocket lip. This was the day after the corporation had made a move in the ongoing negotiations to restrict all union members from carrying knives. The blade-carrying point ended up being nixed in the contract.

My temporary unwillingness to help him get his job done succeeded in his determining it was best to make his point in another manner and to never "squeal" about anything involving me in our future working relationship.

All these concerns about a legally carried, moral tool that's been around since man made a second generation tool (i.e., tool out of a tool).

It's rough being a slave. :(

The funny thing is ,if a woman asks for a knife and I hand her a small, PC, Swiss Army knife she will often look at it, and me, like I'm nuts and ask if I don't have a larger one.

But, if I want to cut something and I take out my small Sebenza, you can bet some woman standing near by will say something about having a knife and it isn't in a tone that makes me feel that she is happy with the idea that I have a knife.

So, I try not to scare sheeple, but I carry and use what pleases me.

Whenever I'm in a questionable situation (as in I don't know if my knife will be a "weapon" or useful tool) and someone asks me if I have anything to cut something I answer "no, sorry. You might want to invest in a pocketknife though." It just isn't worth the aggravation...

Man. Someone said that SAK's won't scare the sheeple. They do around here. You can be as low key as you want, and sharpen your pencil with the 1" blade, open mail, cut string, open packages, whatever, all with the 1" blade, and they watch you wide-eyed, like they're "onto you".

And as soon as you finish opening your impenetrable plastic food wrapper and pocket the knife, they forget all about how menacing you were, in about 3 seconds.

This is with zero brandishing, matter of fact demeanor, low key, and unobtrusive as possible.

It's pitiful.

I carry three knives at all times. The Sanley pocket snap off blade knife in my shirt pockes, the Karshaw Blackout or Kabar Wart Hog with pocket clip in my jeans pocket and the Explorer SAK in a belt holster. 90% of the men around here have a Buck or some other folding knife sheath on their belts. Everywhere they go. But then this is farm and ranch country.

I usually carry 2-3 knives on me at any time, but then I may also carry 1-2 guns on me at any time, so the knives are the least to offend.

really glad this was brought up.
i recently bought a case peanut for the office. My spyderco delica was getting too many comments. But shoot, here in Hollywood CA the delica is nice to have on my way home at night. lately i've been leaving it at home. the peanut is fine for the office though, but it ain't gonna scare off the crazies!
plus the delica has the wave feature, although pretty much useless in most cases, it just makes it look more like a knife for killing people.

I am a federale. For a while, I carried a 710 and a 705 or 707. At work, I carried a Queen small stockman. One of my friends saw it, and said I should keep it at home. The same friend who is a big gun and knife collector. The same friend who had put in 30 years by then, and new the games. Even though there is a 2.5" blade rule, my contractor security staff and FOP's have decreed that no knives are allowed. I was going to start carrying a SAK, but decided against it. I normally walk out the door with either my SNG (thats in for a little RNR right now), SMF, or Sebenza, been carrying my Ritter Grip, in addition to my small Camillus demo folder, and my Farmer EDC sheath knife. I don't carry a knife into work, and while it still makes me feel naked, I am used to it. What really surprised me, is that guys on the work crews, both agency and contractor, can't even carry a utility knife on the job. One guy I know, who had been there for a long time, and is a boss of one of the crews, asked a guard one day what he should use to cut something, his teeth? The guard promptly asked what he needed cut, and produced his folder (no idea what it was). Another guy got a boatload of crap for bringing in his bread knife. My sections break room however looks like a chefs kitchen, with all of the knives used at parties.

Bottom line, if you're a federale, don't risk bringing a knife in the building.

Very, very familiar. I, too, am federal -- and I am also knifeless at work. It's just the way things are. :(

At least. I carry a large folder like my Manix and a small slipjoint like my Queen Canoe in 1095.

So this is what America's come to, huh? What a sad state of affairs! Maybe any man who deems it appropriate to go about "armed" (read: carrying a knife) should now equip himself with nothing more lethal looking than a pink Victorinox Classic or one with those little Edelweiss flowers all over it so he doesn't risk frightening the ladies or those male sheeple who are similarly terrified by anything they suspect might be a weapon. Fortunately, that is not the case where I live, except probably in our nearest federal office building. On any routine day I'll usually carry three pocketknives, though my SAK will likely get the most use. Why do I carry three? (1) - Because I enjoy my knives, and (2) - because I can!

I am very glad on two points; I'm glad I live in TX where just about every adult male has a large folder hanging off a pocket of his jeans, and I'm glad I don't work for anybody who gives a crap what knife or knives I have.

I always have at least three knives on me when I'm walking around, usually a pocket knife, a necker, and a fixed blade on the belt. If I need one or feel like it, I might hang a khuk on too.

I usually have two - tiny blade on the Leatherman Micra and some sort of folder. I'm frequently in a sub-2.5 environment, so have a nice little collection of small blades to EDC - Spyderco Dodo, dragonfly, kiwi, SAK classic, arno bernard fixed blade.

I always thought the 2.5" rule applied in post offices - I've seen several "no weapon" posters in various post offices, though haven't noticed one lately.

Start keeping a mental list of tasks around the office that require a blade. That way you have a ready response to the "Why do you carry THAT THING?" question. "This knife is a tool that lets me break down boxes, open tough plastic packages, slice fruit for lunch, etc. etc. quickly and easily so I can get back to my real job. I also carry it for emergencies (helps if you have a good story about somebody's seatbelt getting stuck, shoelace caught in the escalator, etc.)." It's always better if you can keep a minor workplace dispute from erupting into a power struggle.

Edited to add: I don't EDC a weapon or self-defense item. I EDC a useful tool. Regardless of how "tactical" the blade going into my pocket looks, it goes there because I expect it to be a tool that gets me through the day. It's not that I don't acknowledge the self-defense possibility of a pocket knife. I just see carrying a knife in the workplace as something that helps me get my job done better, faster, and safer. These are tangible benefits that a supervisor or boss can relate to.

How to put this.

When I was doing the orientation thing where I work, I was told no longer than 6 inches total. That very day I had a 4.75 blade Harsey Tactical in my right front pocket, huge clip and all. No Comment, no one seemed to notice.
First day on the job I have a Camillus 5.5 Cuda Maxx and a Leek on me. My leadman asks about them, says WOW, that is one cool knife. :D
On any given day, you walk into the QA office, there are knives on desks, knives being sharpened during break and lunch, knives being fondled.:)

Currently me EDC is three Kershaws, a SG2 Junk Yard Dog II, a small Junk Yard Dog, and the good old all black Leek. The Leek is my thrasher, seeing how long it will last til destroyed.

I carry three EDCs, in addition to two guns, even when

I would be pretty

if I had to leave anything in my truck.

Always at least 3.

Right and left front pockets, and an SAK Classic on my keychain.

Usually the right front pocket is something small like a Benchmade 530 or A.G. Russell Featherlite. Blade length about 3 inches.

And the left front pocket is something larger. Blade length about 3 3/4 inches. Generally it's an Endura ZDP-189 serrated, but tonight it was a Chinook 3.

For many years I was both a pedestrian and worse than that a very late night pedestrian in a urban enviroment.. Even though I wasn't WWB - I got stoped and searched/patted down a lot -enough so I would just assume the position - legs spread -hands clasped on head at the start of the whole process. I've carried some sort of knife since I was 10 -so they'd almost always find my knife - I was pretty relaxed about this -they would run wants and warrants on me and I'd be on my way home in 10 or so min. I gotta believe that if the cops had come up with multiple knives off of me - I would of gotten the dubious honor of sitting (locked) in the back of the squad car while they really looked into my past life and that of anyone who even sorta looked like me.Wouldn't a killed me - but it's pretty un-pleasant odor wise in those back seats!
To be very honest with ya'll -I've carried some pretty "tactical" knives simply because they were great practical tools. But I'm an old man and I'm still gonna run like hell before I even think about the defensive use of a knife.
