show me your large camp/ hiking knives

I have some Rangers that make good camp knives:

Swamp Rat has a few, if you can find them for sale.

The BRKT Hudson Bay and Busse Sarsquatch are good camp knives.

The compact, 6.5" blade Busse ASH1 is suitable, too.

The British MOD4 is a camp knife, but I hate the balance on it.

Either of these large HI kardas would be a good choice.

Kukris, goloks, and chopper bowies are also handy in camp.

But an inexpensive Ontario camp machete will work just fine.

Not tried an Ontario, and if I did I suspect I'd still favour my #2 because of the front end, but I suspect they'd make a fantastic general camp tool. I figure Jerry Hossom must have handled a few blades in his time, and he sure argues steels well.

"I once tried to convince one company to make a machete with a properly convexed edge. In trying to tell them how easy it was to do, I was able to sharpen an Ontario machete to a 30 micron finish in 6-1/2 minutes, using three belts - 60, 220, and 30 microns. That time included the time to change belts. That edge will hold up longer than many more expensive blades doing the same tasks. I can have my choice of anything; I use an Ontario machete around the yard."

- Hossom 01-11-07

In the short machetes, I like the Ontario. In longer ones, I prefer Tramontinas and Condors. I collect and use choppers of all kinds, but most are over priced for what they will do. Many are just too heavy to carry around all day. My current favorite is the BRKT Golok. It has serious chopping power in a light, compact package. But it costs ten times what the camp machete does, and it sure isn't ten times better. I like to use the golok more, but the little camp machete with a proper convex edge cuts about as well.

Wow! Those turned out great!

ROCK6

Not bad, but I think he turned that ornamental one into more of a zombie slayer than a hard use knife. I think he did better with this one -

I'm pretty sure this was one of his too [archive for that one is slack], and if it is it is the best one I've seen of his -

Still, none of them inspire me particularly. If I ever get round to doing that Recon Scout for my amigo I shall be aiming for something with the clean lines, kinda like Ray Laconico's Bowie of a similar size, but blued and kinda ugly looking instead.

Wanna fell a tree with one swoop !!!

I don't own any choppers.

There, I said it. Now, to run for cover...

My camp knife, and closest thing to a chopper I have is a 6"-blade Breeden Peacemaker. Works great for what I do.

Hey Dylside,
In the picture above of the two guys, I'm assuming one of them is you and one is Justin from Ranger knives, and if so, who is who?
