Stripped CS Recon-1

I love the re-profiling on that secondary tip. It looks like a proper tanto now.

I'm probably going to receive a lot of flack for this from the Spyderco community, but after some positive comments, here is my heavily modified Tenacious. :grumpy:

Emerson-esk Wave opening, increased gimping, scale mods to fit my hands.

I took some production pics, and hopefully, I do this justice.

After taping blade and marking where I want the Wave to go:

Time to cut:

After more cutting, rounding and sanding:

I found that the back gimping was a little shallow, so I change it:

(Not too noticeable - just ground a little deeper so I get more flesh on the blade).

Next, the handles. The way my hands are positioned, I notices I definitely don't get a decent purchase on the knife. So, a little painter's tape and marker later:

(Yeah yeah, the design looks pretty homo, but it fits my hands and it worked)

Cutting, with extreme prejudice:

(NOTE: Always cut G10 with a mask and goggles! I learned only AFTER I finished cutting that G10 was actually fiberglass and resin - I was coughing for a few days afterwards).

After a bit more prejudice, and a nice long soak in a tub, here is the end product:

Afterthoughts:
- I know it's ugly. It's not meant to look pretty, but to work properly in my hand. Functionality over form is how I live it.
- I did eff up a bit - In some parts of the handle I grounded too deeply and cut a bit of the metal.
- This is the first knife I ever altered. After seeing how people done it, I can definitely tell you it's not as easy as it looks. It takes a great deal of skill to cut metal and G10 properly
- Always wear protective gear!

It looks really nice! :barf: Well it's functional right? How does your wave mod work? :)

i dont know how to post pics but i tend to attack my handles with a rat tail file. sometimes it looks pretty good, sometimes it just makes it grippy, sometimes both.

Here's one I went old school on...

CS Laredo Bowie that I've been working on, trying to give it an old timey kind of look. I sanded down the handle, rounded off the sharp edges, engraved it then re-stained. (this made it both more comfy and gave it some better non-slip grip)

I didn't like how much the guard stuck out on the sides, so I ground them down in a half moon kind of shape, this gave the knife a slimmer profile and made it more comfy to choke up on the grip. I also ground out the choil to make it large enough to accomodate my finger.

Sanded the blade, forced some pitting, then forced a patina. And did some "vine" pattern filework on the spine. :)

I took this Browning competition bowie, added some jimping and rounded the spine of the blade for comfort and grip...

@BryFry: That's an awesome looking knife! Great job on the blade!

How did you do the pattern on the back part of the blade, and how did you colour it black? Drill press and extreme caution :D?

Thanks!

I used hand files on both knives. For the pattern on the old western bowie I just used a round file and triangle shaped file, the kind you can pick up at any hardware store. Both knives are non-stainless so I used some liquid gun-blue to darken up the steel.

For the jimmping on the other knife I used the triangle shaped file, then a little gun-blue aplied with a Q-tip, then to round off the spine I used a flat file to knock off the sharp shoulers, then progressively finer grits of sandpaper to give it a nice mirror like smoothness that feels quite comfortable on your thumb.

...Gimping is...well I don't really know what it is, but I'm sure it's not something discussed in polite conversation.

Gimping? ...is that what Zed and the other guy were doing to Ving Rhames in Pulp Fiction?

"Bring out the Gimp!"

It's called jimping. Gimping is...well I don't really know what it is, but I'm sure it's not something discussed in polite conversation.

Hahahahahaha. Sorry about that. I've seen it spelled both ways, so a took a leap of faith.

Here's a damascus Kershaw Skyline I modified and traded away
1) Hand rubbed finish on blade to lighten the color
2) Contoured, linseed oil and beeswax finished bocote scale.
3) Polished hardware and pocket clip
4) Reeve styled lanyard
5) Mirror polished hardware
6) Mirror polished bronze bushings
7) Mirror polished, super sharp edge
