Show-n-Tell Time - Moose/Eq End Trapper/Muskrat!

I scored this Winchester (black box) Moose today in a trade, and it looked awful familiar, so I put it next to my Mississippi Moose, and I'll bet a penny or two they came from the same "parents"!
The finishing details on the Miss Moose are much nicer though, and I think that's because of the producer's (Vintageknives) exacting standards; Long pulls, cut swedges, and more "rounding" or "easing" of all the edges. It makes so much difference to a knife; both nice, but Miss Moose wins the beauty contest here!!;)

Charlie ,the list price for your Winchester Moose was less than a third of what Vintage Knives charges for their Moose. Larry

I'm sure you are right, Larry. Queen charges an arm and a leg for small orders, especially with the extra detail work. The company that commissioned the Black Box Winchesters had much larger orders. And they were made in '88, nearly 20 years ago.
I'm not sure Vintageknives is making enough money to maintain such a nice site. I for one like going there to read his latest ramblings etc. But it's hard to make money selling U.S. made knives. I'm pretty sure Bill at Cumberland does it for the love of it!

Charlie, I was trying to point out that if you consider the price difference even allowing for inflation. I would hope the extra money would buy a little better fit and finish. I hope I didn't step on your toes. Larry :o

No toe stepping, not at all!! I get your point, I just added info for clarity. I like having as much information as possible, and I assume the same of others.
I always appreciate your posts, Larry. In fact I like to hear from everyone. It's what keeps BF going!!
Imagine if everyone read the threads, but no-one commented!! Booooooorrrrrriiinnnnnnggggggg!

Whoooda thunkit??
I always thought the "6" in the pattern number meant bone, but I guess there are exceptions!?!?

I always thought the "6" in the pattern number meant bone

I was thinking the same thing, 5=stag, 6=bone. However, thats not always the case. At one point, second cut was apparently marked either way, seemingly more with XX or Tested marked knives. This one doesn't seem to be that old, and in going through lists of pattern numbers vs handle material it seems lately that second cut stag is now designated with a 5, or at least all the ones I could find were, back to the 1980s.
That being said, it can be near impossible to tell second cut from bone. Since stag handles are made from deer antler, and since antler is bone, once either one is cut into handles, jigged, dyed and finished out you'd be hard pressed to tell one from the other. Also, since both are technically bone handles I guess it would be appropriate for second cut stag to be labeled as either since it is both.
