I think you're leaning into it too hard!

I cut up my knuckles a little, not any bleeding, scabbed and healed in a week.

Mike,

I've done it a few times....these don't hurt that bad, even though the one is pretty darn deep. I usually trim my fingernails, now that hurts.

Vege-Taco,

These little nicks will be healed up by Halloween, but I'm sure to have some fresh cuts by then. Ha, Ha

having worked construction for 30+ yrs. i've learned to wear gloves when i get close up to things that might hurt me. be careful!!!! :D ( and dont forget the saftey glasses )

Gloves and rotating machinery is a recipe for disaster! Instead of just removing a little meat that will heal quickly, you could get the glove (and your hand and your arm) wrapped up so quickly in the belt and drive that you'll mangle it beyond recognition.

I'm surprised at how many knifemakers actually wear gloves while grinding! It's extremely dangerous. Same thing with drill presses, milling machines, etc. If it rotates, go gloveless!!!

The last time that happened to me, I kicked the guy out of the shop and told him to never come back. :)

I had a guy who was kind of a leech, was out of work for the winter, and I guess he figured it was his duty to come to my shop every morning at 7am and kill time. After a few times I just had to tell him that I had work to do, and if he wanted he could stay, but I would be concentrating on what I was doing.
I was grinding and he was standing next to the grinder just yaking away....now when I grind, the only thing that exists in my world is that 2" section of belt that is whizzing by. He was jabbering about something, and reached over and nudged me with his elbow to make a point....you guessed it....my knuckles went right into a new 50 grit belt! I almost decked the guy, but rather than injury my hand any further, I said a few choice words and told him to get his blankety blank butt outta my shop, and never come back. It was bad enough that I took a trip to the hospital, and spent the next 3 weeks being unable to work in the shop. "Belt Rash" on the hands is no fun!

scottickes,

I've been told not to wear gloves for that exact reason, and as much as my knuckles are messed up, I'm glad my whole hand isn't mangled.

Ed,

Nobody's fault but mine....and yes, I did do some cussing.

I have never gotten it that bad but one time the belt edge ziped my forarm and i have a wicked scar from that.

Bobby, those picts make my sphincter pucker...

Ed, anybody dumb enough to jab somebody on a grinder is beyond stupid and inconsiderate. Oh, the urge to dag the fellow...

I don't grind that much, and I don't use coarse belts, so my grinder bumps have been pretty tame. But about a year ago I managed to catch a CAT 40 tool holder with a sharp cutter in it just right and cut a flap off the side of my finger. I folded it back in place to heal, but it is a little crooked to this day.

Nope, not to the knuckles. Last night I shortened my thumb on a 50 grit belt at top speed though. I was a bit surprised at how much that bled........and how long it bled.

SDS

I've never run a knuckle or finger into my grinder face on, but i have, when coming across with a handle for a blade on the slack belt bumped the side of my finger into the edge of the belt and got a nice line cut

heck , half the time I don't even know I'm bleeding until I notice the water in the cooling bucket is red .

Used to do it plenty of times -- never got three at a time though! :D
