Here is my belt grinder. It looks rough and crude, but it runs fantastically well and I have very few complaints with it. This has been a constantly evolving tool. It began as a project that coincided with the first COVID lockdowns. Because of that I lost my access to a machine shop so I made the first iteration of the grinder almost entirely with a table saw and a drill press. As the world began to recover and reopen I was able to squeeze a few hours of shop time in here and there and started improving it piece by piece. This is likely the final iteration of it as I'm working on an entirely new chassis at the moment. The highlights of the current iteration include a rock solid tracking setup made from 3/4" aluminum stock, rotating on bearings at the base. The platen is 10" long, ceramic, and water-cooled by a pump connected to the power switch on the VFD, so as soon as I turn on the grinder the platen cooling loop begins to circulate. I just recently came into a 3 hp Baldor Super-E motor so I grabbed a KBAC-29 VFD to run it. I'd previously been using a 1.5 hp motor which was more than sufficient for knife making but left me wanting for a little more power when really hogging steel for other projects.

Dude I love it. Looks like a beast. That cooling platen is clutch I bet. You find it helps a lot?

@SS369 I've always been a fan of the Pheers. Thanks for sharing it man.

@razor-edge-knives Man I like that set up! Also like the custom light brackets. Thanks for sharing the pics.

M.McAlevy M.McAlevy dude I love your storage rack for attachments.... I need to do something like that. That horizontal grinder looks excellent too!

I built this grinder at the end of 2020, it has been great. The motor is three phase, 1.5hp. It has a VFD, tilting ability, small wheels and multiple work rests. I built a custom bench and drawers under it, which also houses the VFD (I have a separate controller on top). I built the tools to adjust everything into the bench, all of the attachments live on shelves above the grinder to make it as efficient as possible. Eventually I would like to add some contact wheels, a water cooled platen/mist cooling and build some more attachments (SGA, radius jig ...)

I don't know how you all keep your shops so clean. I have eight 2"x72" grinders. The first I owned was a square wheel grinder. I have had it for 40 years. Next I got a bur king. After that I got a Dozier grinder and then a JL horizontal grinder. Then I got four TW-90's. For me the TW-90 is the perfect grinder. I wouldn't change a thing. For those knifemakers just starting out this is what you can have if you stick with it for forty years. I sold my first knife in 1980.

I do. I found myself melting the edges of belts when grinding for extended periods previously (to be fair, often when it was also very hot out so convective cooling was limited). Now the platen is always cool so I find myself actually pinching blades to it when flat grinding sometimes. I wouldn't call it essential by any means but a very nice feature to have.

I'll bite and show off a real ugly one.

This is the OG KMG-1. Been buzzing out knives on it for over a decade now. I'm a firm believer in "its the archer not the arrow" mentality.

Its still belt drive, but its VFD. 3HP.

It spins belts. It tracks straight. Sparks come off and knife-looking things emerge. I have really no complaints...i know every quirk on it.

I've said I was going to buy a fancy new one for years now, but I don't. The time is near.

M Mark van Elteren Very nice! Looks super solid!

Tom Lewis Tom Lewis Wow sir! Thanks for sharing these pictures. Having 8 - 2x72 grinders is an accomplishment in itself! Glad to see those TW-90s being put to work. Looks like an amazing set up!

David Schott David Schott You can't beat something that just "works." I've never owned a KMG, but I feel a sense of nostalgia whenever I see one of the originals.

Those large open/spoked wheels make my fingers twitch!! I had a run in with an open backed wheel that I escaped from with no injury, but those spoked wheels look like they want to eat my arms!!
I totally agree with that .But , no less dangerous is driving a car or being in the bathtub in the bathroom :)
