TBG, You can buy 'Bestine' rubber cement thinner that helps with clean-up and those mistakenly stuck pieces 
Flammable, nasty stuff...but it works.
Rubber (and contact) cement have been around for years and for good reason.
One way to avoid making a mess is to slow down. Just do a set amount each session and do them perfectly.
I know that I will look ahead, only to screw up what I have in my hands now.
