Hi All,

Interested to see if anyone has a recent or latest design of their own that you have commissioned to a knife maker.

Post a sketch or drawing or if you are not able to post an attachment, best describe what your design is.

Also share with us which maker you have appointed to make the knife and post a picture of the finished piece if available.

Will post a pic of my own soon... when I can figure out how to... just became a Gold Member but it still doesnt allow me to post attachment:confused:

Look forward to see what's out there

Really? For your eyes only... looks like this thread is dead in the water.

Everyone else feel the same way?

You might get some others, but it seems like lately, when someone posts up a true original, the maker gets requests for something very similar...that's not cool.

That ain't cool, guess defeats the purpose of owning a one-off custom piece...

Still trying to post attachment... Spark! you around?

These first two started off as production knives I liked the feel of, which I copied on paper and then modified to my hand's shape and size, and made other tweaks. The short sword is 100% my design, and all the proportions and lines on paper were faithfully followed. Learned a lot during this phase, but designing on paper only has many drawbacks without the actual follow-through.
I was fortunate to be able to work a trade for surf gear and bike parts for these guys.
Big props to Seth Burton of Cosmoknives for turning the paper ideas into steel reality.

This one was made partly to my design. The handle shape is all Peter Marzitelli, but the other details are to my design. This was more of a collaboration with a maker, and really is the way to go, unless you actually design, then make your own knives. There's a lot to be said for allowing the design to evolve during the course of a knife's construction.

I guess I see it a bit differently than sir Garsson. :p

If I designed a knife, had a maker execute my design and heard he was flooded with orders for a similar piece, I'd be quite flattered.

I only did this once - about 20 years ago. I did up a detailed life-size sketch and mailed it to the maker. He made EXACTLY what I had sent him. The result was - not awful, but not a reall attractive knife. The reason? The difference between what I thought I knew about knife design and what I actually knew was rather HUGE.

These days, I mostly select a maker that I know does the type of knife I envision quite well, give them fairly broad parameters and let them do their thing without too much input. That works for me.

About the only contemporary knife that I have deigned and had made by someone else was the Mojo camp knife - but then I also had a hand in the making of the piece, along with Dan Farr and Matt Gregory:

Hell.........STeven is so paranoid that he won't ven post pictures of the more pedestrian stuff that he owns, much less anything that he designed. Something about fearing that if he does, somebody will like his stuff so much that they will go out of their way to find his house and try to steel something from a guy who has a room full of swords and knives within easy reach. LOL;)

hey, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you:)

Funny:D....until it isn't:grumpy:.

How many knives do you have worth stealing, Joe?

I'm not worried about someone breaking into my house while I am there....I would enjoy that.....it isn't the knife or the sword for primary use....it is a Roger's Rangers American Tomahawk....specially prepped.

Here are a few drawings. The few times I have done this it was directed for certain makers. I will not take credit for designing the knives myself. I take things that I liked about previous work of a maker and incorporate their style into my drawing.

For example, I saw a folder I liked that Josh Smith made. I drew this picture using a close handle shape to the other one but I changed it a tiny bit and added a different blade style. My drawing was basic and I made many corrections that I talked to Josh about on the phone and cannot be seen in the picture.

Here is my picture. I asked for curved double "s" shaped bolsters which aren't in my picture. And also for a better recurved blade shape that looks more realistic. I also did not draw the clip and the drop on the blade that I requested later.

Josh followed by sending my HIS version (below)

And this is the knife.

Now here is a rough drawing I made which I wanna have Don Hanson work on sometime. I cant stand the way I drew the blade and it will not look all exaggerated and crazy like this when it comes down to making it. I over exaggerated the blade here. Again, part of the handle shape is taken from Don's previous work, but I changed it a little.

Here is a VERY ROUGH drawing I sent to Kyle Royer which I would like to follow through with one day. He also sent me his own version which is much more refined and realistic but I don't wanna post that yet. This is mine..
