Show Us Your Scouts

Nice Scouts, guys.

I posted this little Rem' Girl Scout in the 'Old Knives' thread, but what the heck. I'll have to get some fresh batteries in the camera and shoot a few more.

I have the A.G. Russell and this one that I purchased at the Scout Office.

Here are a couple of Empires, a smaller Junior scout @ 3 3/8", and a regular 3 5/8" model, which I think is the most common scout size. Both have jigged bone handles.

I have a couple...

Here is a Bulldog and a Inox...

How do you like that Demo? I keep wanting to get one, but I keep getting told not to bother, that my Wenger SI is much more refined.

Every scout collection should have at least one BSA knife. This one is an Ulster.

I have one very much like this that was my dad's when he was a kid. After I quit Boy Scouts, some numbskull who looked suspiciously exactly like me pried off the bail, and then took a Dremel and ground off the BSA logo. :( I still kick myself over that.

The pattern is not my cup of tea (though I do carry my Victorinox Soldier from time to time), but the carbon steel on the Ulster takes an astonishing edge. It's a workhorse of a knife for sure.

I love the scout/camp pattern. These are my most used ones. I have some others, but didn't feel like digging them out. Sorry about the poor pic quality.

A Case that belonged to my grandfather.

A Hammer Brand Kamp-King. Made by Imperial.

An Imperial BSA. This one was in very bad shape when I got it, so I experimented a bit. It lives on my work bench.

An Imperial Super Kamp-King. For some reason, I love the beverage can opener. Not much call for one of those today, but its neat.

A POWR-KRAFT. Made for Montgomery Wards by Camillus. The scales, probably celluloid, were in terrible shape, so I replaced them with wood.

Another pic of the POWR-KRAFT to better show the wood.

And finally, a Western.

You could say I have a few...

Imperials, Ulsters, Remington, Camillus, LF&C, they're all there. Not pictured are the ubiquitous Vic Soldiers, my AG Russell scout in bone, or my Camillus MIL-K.

Here's the one I had as a scout. It looks a little worse for wear but it is my original. I remember begging my parents to buy it at the scout counter in a local department store about 40 years ago.

I have a Case, several Camillus brands, and a bag of SAK's. I also have a Remington like Peter Parker's, but the phillips on his is, an awl on mine. It works great - it makes a finer, more smooth hole.

I went through several places and made a list of all the different types & styles, and finally stopped after a page long list. LG4 (pgs. 280-281) lists an amazing variety of this type.

This is off topic, but I felt the need to comment:
Great looking knives guys. Has anyone ever seen a custom scout? I sure havent. BTW, boy scouts dont carry scout knives anymore, and I doubt most could identify the can or bottle openers.

Some Packs and/or Troops do carry their knives. (Pack = Cub Scouts; Troop = Boy Scouts.) It really depends on the local Council, and the chartering organization as well.

Our council leaves it up to the Pack/Troop leadership, so we are governed by the chartering orgs. policies. For my Pack, we are chartered through the local elementary school's PTC, so we follow the school's policy, which is no knives on site, for any reason. (Although I do carry mine, and end up using it almost every Pack meeting, to fix something.) We can & do carry our Scout knives for any event off-site, where policies allow. Another Pack locally is chartered through their church, and they (the boys) are expected to have their knives with them at all meetings & events.

Most of the boys I know here know exactly what their knives can do, even if they don't have a use for all of the tools most of the time.

thx - cpr

The Demo is a plain jane hard working knife. They were made by several different makers, mine is a Camillus. I think it is the equal of most of the scout knives and I have used mine hard.

Ulster

I did the same thing with my dad 38 yrs. ago except it was a Camillius Cub Scout Knife. I really didn't think he would get it for me, but the next thing I new he was shelling out the 5 bucks for it!

Absintheur posted the picture below. What is the small blade with thumb stud. Most scouts have a can opener but some have these instead. Is it just a smaller blade?

That is the can opener. I have that same knife and the can opener works pretty well, it does take more force and is more destructive of the can lid though.

And they aren't always functional on older knives. I have a scout/camp knife from the 30s with a similar can opener. A previous owner tried to sharpen it on a grinder and burnt the temper out. Its softer than a butter knife now. :grumpy:
