Hey all!
I'm curious to see photos of other people's shops to see how they're laid out, and to hopefully learn a few nice tricks for laying things out!

I'll get the ball rolling! Right now I work from a shared workshop, I have 60 sq ft of personal space, and then my grinder and kiln live in the shared area. I'm thinking it might be time to start looking for other workshop space though as it's been getting harder and harder to keep everything organized and productive which is part of the reason I started this thread...

Looking forward to seeing photos of everyone's workspaces, big or small!

I would love to have a big basement workshop!
I worked as a steam/refrigeration engineer for 38 years in basements, and learned to like them.

Aaron that's a great looking shop and very well equipped, maybe one day.......Here's a shot of my little knife shop in my carport storage area.

I thought this was a great thread, as a user to see the places these knives we love so much come from . Also Gough you have a new customer, I really like your products . Also liked the sharpening video! I been struggling with sharpening and picked up alot from that.

Aaron, you're more than welcome to put all of those tools in my "shop" (garage), and I won't even charge you. :)

Looking forward to the pics!

This is the most recent photo I have, from right at the start of summer. It looks pretty similar though, but now with a stand mounted 2x72.

I wish I could say that space was all mine! It's part of a shared workshop space that I help manage. The space is ok, but unfortunately few people other than myself and my co-manager treat the space like they should, and I often spend big chunks of 'my' time cleaning up or fixing things... It has been frustrating to say the least!

I agree about basements though, I'm totally fine with a nice quiet basement for a workshop!

Looks like you'e out to a great well-organized start! One nice thing about starting small is that you have to learn to organize things well, and that pays off when you get a larger space! My first workshop in Toronto was two plastic folding tables in my living room, then I moved to another apartment where I used the bedroom as my shop and had my bed in the living room :D

Thanks mate! Glad the sharpening video was helpful for you!

I wish I could mate! If I was able to rent a place here for a reasonable price that had a double or single garage I would pounce on it. But any house in Toronto that is large enough to have a garage will go for $1M+ I'll probably end up buying/renting a rural property outside of Toronto in the future for that exact reason, they're much *much* cheaper... I dream of having a nice big shed one day!

My dad keeps taunting my from his house back in Australia that is out in the sticks and has a nice big shed.

Nice mate! Is that a double garage?

Are those blue benches something you bought, or did you make them?

Some of you guys have really nice tools and equipment. Some day I would love to build a dedicated shop but for now I'll be rockin' the basement and garage shop thing. Here are some pics of my spaces.

Wow, you guys have some awesome garages! To hell with putting cars in those things. That anvil set up is great.

I don't think there's anything wrong with a basement or garage mate! I would kill to have either! Leasing commercial space is *really* expensive here in Toronto...

its very interesting how everyone uses the space they have

Absolutely! You yourself have some amazing equipment there! CNC mill and lathe, 5C collet chuck, sandblaster, surface grinder, horizontal bandsaw, hardness tester... Very nicely rounded bunch of gear! Very similar to what I'd like to have setup one day!

Is all that solely for knifemaking or do you work on other stuff too?

Very cool mate! I bet it's amazing to think back to that small apartment space!

Here's ours----

I'm still working out of this side, so not much has changed since this photo was taken... Well, the boys have both gained about 70 pounds since then, and I've added more lighting, but the shop's pretty much the same.

My much better half helping out when I was moving the bigger tools here.... We were shoving the 100# LG frame over to the side that nobody ever sees... ;)

This is the part of the shop that pains me everyday--- cuz I haven't had the time or money to get it all put together/finished. There's another room on the other side of the wall (right side)... so there's almost 1,000 sq. ft of shop that is basically a catch-all until I can get it set up. If anybody has a couple weeks of time and about $5k to donate, then I'd love to get it all finished! :D LMFAO ;) The ironic part, is this side of the building was the actual "mother-in-law quarters" so it's a lot nicer than the "garage" side I currently work in.
