Hunting big game with the Mora Kansbol:
We generally like spiders, but there are exceptions--notably, widows in the mailbox or the dogs' bowls. Widows are the only dangerous spiders native to this part of Florida. This brown widow (body length about 3/8 inch) was in a dog's dinner bowl. I flipped the unwelcome lady out of the bowl with the Kansbol and dispatched her with a ruthless stab through the thorax. She was a brown widow, regarded as twice as venomous as black widows by various Internet Authorities. It's a shame you can't see the orange hourglass, but it is on the other side of blade and covered with abdominal goop.
I went to feed the next dog, and there was a golden silk orb weaver (body length about 2 inches) in his bowl. They are usually harmless and make beautiful webs. I eased her out of the bowl with the knife and carried her to a tree to make a web--I hope--but she is probably dying. No photo. :-(
