I have been carrying the Boye Boating and Rescue Knife with a sheepsfoot serrated dendritic cobalt blade and a titanium marlinspike for only a few days. Being rust-proof, it has been very suitable for the weather--we have had over a foot of rain in the last week. Out of the box, the blade had an average BESS score of 76, which is one of sharpest I have seen. The serrations are superb and cut baling twine even better than my folding Victorinox serrated paring knife does--well, the Victorinox is not quite that sharp, probably around BESS 120 to 130 now.
But in this photo, I was using the marlinspike. I really like marlinspikes, but the other knives I have with marlinspikes all have drawbacks from my point of view. The best of those other knives is the A.G. Russell Sea Skorpion, but it has two framelocks, and I don't like framelocks. There is another A.G. Russell that I do not have because it is too expensive. The Myerchin Gen 2 Crew Pro Rigging Sheepsfoot is mediocre in all respects. The Victorinox Skipper might be nice if I could open the marlinspike, but it has defeated all my efforts so far. The Boye marlinspike differs from all those others in that it is flat, which is great for untying knots. The web site also says, "The spike will pry up to 200 lb (be careful) and can serve as a digging tool when you really need one. The shackle key is a wrench for anything that will fit in it."
The Boye blade and marlinspike can be easily opened and closed with one hand. The blade is a lockback. The marlinspike does not lock, but there is no way it's going to cut my fingers off. The knife is light and slender enough to fit comfortably in a pocket. The one flaw I have found is that the pocket clip is so tight, I can barely slip a flat screwdriver blade under it, and it is quite reluctant to bend. I have no experience bending titanium, so I do not want to be too rough with it.
In the photo, I wanted to untie and retie the twine. I could not get it open with my fingers. A knife blade would have cut the string, but I wanted to reuse it. So the marlinspike was just the thing.
