I'd like to see your broken bush knives. Survival knives, whatever you want to call them. I'll pick a poster in about a week, and will send them a free knife. A few caveats...

1. Let's keep this to knives with an overall length of 12" or under. I've seen plenty of broken machetes and RTAKs; this is for knives 12" long or under.
2. You determine what "broken" is. If you think chipping constitutes broken, then post some chipped edges. If a loose handle is broken, then post it. Tip breakages, entire blade snapped, handle scales busted, it's up to you. No need to explain why you determined a "break".
3. When you post your photos, let us know how the break occured.
4. This is open to any BladeForums member, not just the Wilderness & Survival crew.
5. Posts without photos will not be considered.
6. You may post as many times as you want with as many broken knives as you want. However, there will only be one prize awarded.

The prize will be a Condor brand knife, but I'm not sure which one I'll be departing with. It might be new or used, it all depends on which one I pick out of the drawer, but it won't have any rust or damage.

Now I have to figure out which of my knives I don't mind breaking:D Seriously this is a good idea. I wish I had some broken knives so I could enter.

You do realize that you just cursed many of us. I've never had a broken knife however the second that this contest is over I'll probably break the first knife I use.

I've broken two but it was about 20 years ago, before the digital camera age. No, I didn't keep the pieces.;)

Here's one of the three Kabars I've broke in my life (batonning all 3 times). This was the latest one, the one that stuck in my leg

The Story:
I use a wood stove to heat with. I split my wood with a large knife. This Kabar lasted for 3 years as a stove knife. It hung on a lanyard on the fence around my stove (small kids). Split EVERY piece of wood that went in my stove for 3 seasons. I went a bought a brand new Kabar 1217 for me and a friend that day at SMKW. Got home, and wanted a fire, started the process, and BLINK! TING! thunk. It broke, flew out and hit the wall and stuck in my left thigh, just above the knee. I pulled it out, patched up, limped back and finished with my KH Jungle Panalwa. It took 3 days before the really bad limping finished. Still got a couple of Kabar 1217 and use them less than before, only because of my Beckers, ESEEs and Moras. Still a good knife.

ETA I used the washers already, and plan on using the other parts as well, someday

I've had several MCKs break just like that.

This was a fairly new Kabar. I was splitting some nice hard firewood. It lasted through about 4 or 5 logs when I notice that the blade had begun to take a bend. I decided to go for broke and well...that's exactly what happened.

Kabar dismantled.

Interesting, the fracture line on these two Ka-Bars is identical.

Yes, percieved by some a flaw in the design. The corner where the tang meets the blade is cut at a 90 degree angle. This creates a fracture point for downward pressure on the juncture. Some have argued that a rounding or wedge of 45 degrees in that corner, would keep this from happening. I do know that Kabar has changed the HT process to allow a more bending of the handle, but either way they still break.

Note how my tang is straight and and not bent near the broken edged but 12bravos is. Mine simply snapped suddenly, but his bent first, giving him a warning. He proceeded and PLINK.

I'm not gonna go into the origins of the Kabar, but it was designed as a COMBAT/UTILITY blade, not a BOREAL BEATER. It was cheap and easy to replace by soldiers, 'cause every PX across the globe had 'em. Nuff sed.

Still good knives. Thanks ya'll. Moose

Here is my worst. I am ashamed to tell the story of how it happened.

*ETA: Dang, I think I misread the title.

My thoughts exactly. I love the design and versatility of the handle/blade, with that said there are better candidates for certain jobs...right tool for the right job :D.

I would love to see a blade that has a full solid tang with all the design features of the KaBar.

Its called a Becker BK7. :D

I'm a Beckerhead, forgive me. Moose

i broke the tip on a SAK, but reprofiled the blade to continue using it long before the digital camera age.

no clue where the knife is now, but it's probably in the garage somewhere.

and while it's not a "woods knife" i've got a Henkiels paring knife with scales that split. need to find some place to return that.

Looking at where the KA-BAR broke - it is at the thinnest point, the BK-7 does not have such a weak point. Seeing the broken KA-BARs doesn't put me off batoning with my BK-7 in the least. My BK-7 is my favourite batoning knife!

Unfortunately I've got no pics of broken knives to post. The last knife I broke was a cheap steak knife with less than 1" of tang going in the plastic. It broke with normal use, I shrugged and dropped it in the bin.
