Show your traditional Horn handles

5K Qs Thanks for the kind words. I love the way horn can shine and glow. I must improve my photography !

Will Power Thanks for your words too Will. I am not sure why the more characterful horn should be on the reverse side of the knife .... fashion ?? I love it too and delight in watching it come out of what looks like a bit of old wood with a bit of polishing.

Jack Thanks Jack ... Nice to see some of your fine examples.

regards Ade

Very nice examples of horn scales everyone. This is a French knife.

Horn, huh?
I guess that (aside from SAK's) at least 80% of all pocket knives I've ever handled in my life would fit in this thread...which is why I tend to prefer smooth materials for knife handles. Here's a few pictures...

Love that top one, Fausto!^^^

This little Pattadese gets carried often. Great little cutter, and I love how the horn has darkened over the past few years and taken on a bit more character.

Fausto Fine examples you show there, I particularly like the lighter horn knives although I wouldn't say I prefer blondes to brunettes...:D

Here's an old Lag from David, a brunette for sure on this side at least (bit greyer/blonde on the other side though!)

Thanks GT, that's a Fleam

Thanks for the informative link, Jack! I grew up on a dairy farm and my wife was once a veterinary technician, but I had no idea what a Fleam was until today.

Heavenly horn on your Lloyd, Mark!!

It may not look it but according to the original catalog this one is horn over celluloid. Pretty cool little knife actually, virtually unused and all dressed up for maybe use with formal wear.

Now if the thread can just capture a glimpse of a rapturous Ruple that Cory Hess has... :D

I'm flattered that you remember. :P

Here's a couple shots I took today. I just started carrying this knife this week. I find that I like it even more in my pocket than I do stashed with my other knives. The sunken joints really make it fun to run my fingers over. I don't have any other knives with sunken joints.

If I have time I'll try to get some pictures of the other horn handles I've acquired. Time seems to be one thing that is in real short supply right now.

Thanks for the photos, Cory!:thumbup: How could I forget a knife with covers like that? Good to hear that you're carrying it now!
Until you pointed it out, I hadn't noticed the sunken joints. To me that's another very desirable characteristic; sunken joints are a primary reason that I've developed a canoe infatuation.
I can relate to the supply/demand challenges of time that you mention; considering the current demands on my time, I can't for the life of me figure out how I had time to be a reasonably "there" father while raising a daughter years ago! I look forward to seeing some of your other horn handles when you get a chance.

Those are just fabulous Fausto. It seems to be a common occurrence but on my pattada as well there's quite a bit of green patina occuring on the inside of the liners already.
Those are some large quality knives :)

Mine is quite a bit smaller, and more of a souvenir trinket but one of the snappiest lockups and a very nicely flat ground laser blade along with my recent 85 in buffalo.

A couple TL-29 mods in interior rams horn.

Some great-looking pics of very interesting knives

That's ageing well Carl

I suspect you'd be charged with animal cruelty if you used one today!

Interesting knife Brad, and a looker

Just a bit! Both sides too! :grumpy: ;)
