If you're still into the 1911 by the way, the Springfield Mil-Spec (not the GI) can still be had around $550 I think, and is a very good 'entry' 1911.
Either way, I think any solid pistol and a good 12 ga will keep you safe for a long time, the rifle would just be icing on the cake.
