Shtf pocket knife

No matter what pocket folder is in my pocket, there is ALWAYS a SAK Farmer on my keychain and a multi-tool and flashlight on my belt ( lately Sog Power-grip and Fenix LD20). The pocket folder that I have been carrying lately has been my ZT 301. But even without that I would be well set with the Farmer and Power-grip.

Leatherman Skeletool CX or Surge, depending if I'm at work or not.
And my DPX Hest fixed blade, either on my belt or in a bag or rucksack.

Something with a robust locking mechanism that is the least likely to fail comparatively speaking. Based on my research, those are the Cold Steel Triad, Spyderco Compression and Benchmade Axis, in no particular order.

One of those massive Opinels might be a good option too. :D

Any folder you have on you will do, better than having a carrot in your pocket.

I'd be sitting pretty with an Emerson Horseman and an Alox SAK though.

I would probably have what I normally have on me every day; a Victorinox Spirit S on my belt; a Victorinox Executive in my RF pocket; a Spyderco Pacific Salt SE in a pocket (not clipped). Depending on the day, I may have another knife or knife-related object(s) on me, too.

I almost always have a 111mm SAK in my pocket. The other knife varies, but usually there is a second folder. I am comfortable with the SAK alone and more comfortable with the additional of a second knife which is usually a ZT 0770CF, GEC 2-blade #42 (Missouri Trapper), Spyderco Delica or I expect my new Native....

Sak tinker, no question about it. I can pry with the screwdriver, scrape and drill with the awl, open a can with the can opener, and keep both blades sharp. No screws to loosen, no lock to fail unexpectedly, steel is tough and resists rust very well, and can be stropped or sharpened on pretty much anything. Not great for defensive use, but there are other answers to that question

Although I generally scoff at all the "If you could have only one" threads because I usually regard them as unrealistic, I view this one differently.

I normally carry a heavy-duty fixed-blade (5" blade, almost 1/4" thick, D2 steel), but I don't carry it everywhere I go so I can't always count on having it on my person.

When thinking about a SHTF scenario, I try to think about situations that I might realistically find myself in, and what tools might prove to be most useful in those situations.

I generally regard folders as simple cutting tools, but I can think of a few realistic emergency situations where I might need to use a folder for something other than a simple cutting tool. Like for example- if I were trapped in an elevator (power outage) and I needed to pry the doors open. I live in California, and earthquakes are a concern here (we're still waiting for the BIG ONE), and if I were trapped in an elevator I might be there for days before rescuers came to get me, or longer. In such a situation, my survival might very well depend on my ability to pry the elevator doors open.

Another example is being trapped in a collapsed building (earthquake again), and I might need to chop my way through a wall if I am unable to get to any doors or windows.

If I were faced with either situation, and if the only tool I had to use was a folding knife, I would want a pretty strong one. I'm not up to date with heavy-duty folders, but the Benchmade Adamas looks capable. I've also seen some Zero Tolerance folders that look pretty tough.

Thinking about this subject, I realize that when I'm not carrying my fixed-blade I don't really have anything on me that would make a good prying tool. Since I normally carry my fixed-blade I pretty much take for granted that I have a prying tool with me. But like I said, I don't always carry it. I normally carry adjustable pliers and a 6" adjustable wrench (one attached to each boot, they often come in handy), and I always carry 2 small AA Fenix flashlights (one in pants pocket, the other attached to a boot), but when not carrying my FB I would be screwed if I needed to pry something. I've thought about adding a small prybar to my other daily-carry tools, perhaps that's something I should look into further.

I read a lot of threads asking what is the best SD knife but I think a better questions what knife are you going to have on you if SHTF we can not always carry a huge fixed blade so what pocket knife would you want to have on you if you could not get back home and it was all you had
I think I'd want my ZT 0350

Whatever knife you have on you at the time would be the one...

So it would be the normal EDC....

More than likely I'll have this on me. It is my 8-6 EDC.

Knife only: bk24 or my BM 710 1401
Multi: sog powerlock (until I find better, haven't been looking though)

I can't say, with any logic, that my fav knife is what I will want when the SHTF. I only hope I have what's necessary.
