Sigg bottles?

No particularly bad or good experiences.

Pros:
Light weight
Some cooler surface designs than kleen kanteen (I think)
Liner supposedly fine with acidic drinks, and stays intact even if bottle dents

Cons:
Dents easily
Can't boil water in it
Not supposed to freeze water in it

I really like them. While they do dent easily, I think the dents add character and distinguish sigg owners who actually use their bottles for outdoors activities from everyone else. They're super lightweight, and theres a bunch of sizes. They even have one called the "classic canteen" or something that comes with a steel cup fitted around the bottom.

I have a duffle bag from Sigg. They were offered at JC Penny for a short time. I picked one up for a great price when they were clearing them out. It hasn't held up well against the Baggage Gnomes at the airport.

Haven't tried one of their bottles but if their bags are any indication of their overall quality, I'd pass.

Haha, very true, I see many pristine siggs in the city :)

Ouch. :(

I have a pristine Sigg that I carry daily in the city, while saving a cheaper Platypus bottle and/or GI canteen for woods duty. I like it quite a bit and have no quality complaints.

Oh, sorry Snow!:o I meant the types with gucci purses and small dogs in carry bags. Maybe I'll just stop before digging myself in further...

Anyway I only use one sigg at a time that bums around with me everywhere and has the scars to prove it (though it might be replaced with the guyot now). I have a pristine second sigg too, sitting in the fridge at home :)

Had some for many years. I was never sold on the coloured ones with a liner for drinks and plain ones for fuel. I have all plain. I know the lining is supposed to protect the bottle from fruit juice acids and such but that has always been an irrelevance to me. I don't do children so I carry water not orange squash. That also meant I could boil in one at a pinch. John Fenna [SP] wrote in SWAT of an experience of one leaking Trangia fuel through a corroded hole. Dunno how that worked out because they were fairly novel to the market when he wrote that. By contrast I've had some old fuel in Sigg bottles for years, just haven't got round to throwing away. Ballooned a little but no signs of leaks. I went off them because I don't like the sound of a part full bottle sloshing when I walk, and it is worse in aluminium.

Wow, I never knew they used to make liner-less plain ones, great info baldtaco  I heard somewhere they'd be making liner-less stainless steel ones soon, I haven't seen any yet though.

Strewth, that's got me thinking. I can't remember how many years I've had them for. I remember getting the guy who used to anodize my bike parts to anodize a couple of them a red/purple colour for the fuel ones. That was way back when I was into bikes and the bottles were several years old then. Gonna go look at some of the new ones now just to keep my hand in.

The SIGG has some definite pluses and minuses to it.

Pluses
1) Water tastes great- the bottles do not leach anything. You can leave them in your car in the hot sun and the water will still taste great
2) Very comfortable to drink out of (unlike the wide-mouth Nalgenes without a splash guard)
3) Narrow mouth

Minuses
1) Dent easily- not that big of a deal, but when they dent they have this coating that cracks/chips on the outside, even the plain ones
2) While the liner keeps the water tasting great, you can't boil water in the bottle
3) Narrow mouth, while it makes it easier to drink from, it makes it harder to clean

I use my sigg more than any of my other water bottles for daily use. It keeps the water tasting better and it is far more comfortable to drink from than any of the other bottles on the market. Backpacking it is great. The only thing that would make it better for me would be if I could boil water in it.

They are good, however they do dent easy, and once empty they still take up space as opposed to a bladder type bag.

That is definitely a plus I forgot to mention, right on jlouis  The first time I used the bottle, I was surprised at how comfortable it was. I don't think about it now, but it was noticeable with my first sigg. :)

While I realize that you can't boil water in 'em, can you drink hot liquids out of a Sigg bottle (coffee or tea), or will that effect the liner?

I've never tried it, but I think it's safe (with regards to the liner). This is from the Sigg USA website FAQ:

"Can I use my SIGG bottle for Hot Tea or Coffee?

We don't recommend you fill a lightweight aluminum bottle with a piping hot beverage, as it will render the bottle untouchable and will burn your hands if you try and pick it up. If your lightweight aluminum SIGG bottle is inside one of our insulated pouches, this will provide you with better protection, but we still don't advise it. You are better off purchasing one of our thermo bottles or our SIGG Hot and Cool Bottle for your hot beverages."

There is no mention of the liner, so it seems by omission that it has a tolerance for high temps.

Thanks-sad thing is that I was even on their site and didn't even think to look:o

No problem Landar15; i had to root around for that one, since I remembered coming across it before :)

and

Moving Target, I'll trade you :D

Not a fan. To narrow of a mouth, I dropped mine once and it dented in 3 places, BAD. No boil in sigg alluminum, although they do make a stainless canteen type bottle. Just never liked it much.

I like Guyot designs Nalgene bottles, and Kleen Kanteens. You gotta watch hot berages in these to the bottle gets hot. I use my Maxpedition bottle carrier though.

I think i'll end up getting a Kleen Kanteen. I like the small mouth much better than the wide. In general, I haven't found any benefit to the larger mouths outside of attachments that can go on them and the ability to clean them. The small mouths are just easier to drink from and since I only use them for water.......well I prefer them. If I am going to heat something up I just end up using my little nestor cup.

Also, how many of you regularly boil water in your bottle (just curious)? I use to boil my water as my sanitation system but I picked up a filter at REI and HOLY CRAP, i'll never go back to boiling. I can fill a whole bottle in less than a minute with not only safe, but clean tasting water. It makes life 10 times easier out in the woods.
