Sigg bottles?

I've never had to boil water in a bottle yet, but I like having that as an option - especially for psk purposes. Having a good filtration system must be great though; it's on my list for sure. I can only imagine how beneficial it is when backpacking and covering lots of ground quickly.

I prefer my Klean Kanteen over my Sigg bottle. The pros and cons of each have already been covered. I like the wider neck of the K/K, easier to clean and inspect interior of bottle. I can drop ice cubes into it. It doesn't dent as easily. I can and do boil water in it, make tea all the time.

i found a sigg bottle at my college in a classroom, and i want to know if there will be any illl effects if i put white gas in it and use it as a gas bottle... i know the msr ones are made of aluminum...but does anyone know if there is any type of special coating or anything?

I've never tried it, but I think it's safe (with regards to the liner). This is from the Sigg USA website FAQ:

"Can I use my SIGG bottle for Hot Tea or Coffee?

We don't recommend you fill a lightweight aluminum bottle with a piping hot beverage, as it will render the bottle untouchable and will burn your hands if you try and pick it up. If your lightweight aluminum SIGG bottle is inside one of our insulated pouches, this will provide you with better protection, but we still don't advise it. You are better off purchasing one of our thermo bottles or our SIGG Hot and Cool Bottle for your hot beverages."

There is no mention of the liner, so it seems by omission that it has a tolerance for high temps.

Bizarre. If the contents are going to be that hot I want to know when I touch it. I slurped from one of those insulated plastic camping mugs with a little hole in the lid – bastard bit me a perfect circle on the lip with what felt like radioactive lava from hell. Got a suspicion they are more interested in peddling a thermo mug to keep the contents warm than protect you from hazard.

I think i'll end up getting a Kleen Kanteen. I like the small mouth much better than the wide. In general, I haven't found any benefit to the larger mouths outside of attachments that can go on them and the ability to clean them. The small mouths are just easier to drink from and since I only use them for water.......well I prefer them. If I am going to heat something up I just end up using my little nestor cup.

Also, how many of you regularly boil water in your bottle (just curious)? I use to boil my water as my sanitation system but I picked up a filter at REI and HOLY CRAP, i'll never go back to boiling. I can fill a whole bottle in less than a minute with not only safe, but clean tasting water. It makes life 10 times easier out in the woods.

Nope, filter all the way. Been that way for years. I'll boil if I'm forced to go primitive but that's not likely.

As above, the ones I have are liner free. White gas for my burner is in one and unleaded in the other. Ballooned but unperturbed after years of sitting there.

As for cleaning narrow mouthed Siggs one has to wonder what the problem is. If it's just limescale that's straight forward enough and seldom enough to be trivial. And even if you put something odd in it it's really no harder to clean out than your glass bong, just put a handful of sand in the cleaning liquid and shake.

I love my Siggs. Lightweight and durable. Sure they dent easy, but who doesn't? I only keep water in 'em so cleaning isn't a problem.

I have ordered a Nalgene Guoyt SS bottle though...love the idea of being able to boil water in the water bottle.

I love my Sigg. It's lighter than the Kleen Kanteens and won't mess me up like plastics will if I want to carry hot coffee in it. And then there's the entire "IN CASE I NEED TO BOIL IN IT" argument. Honestly, how often will I have to worry about that? If I'm in a real do or die survival situation, then I won't be bothered with ruining the bottle. I'll gladly sacrifice the Sigg for a few days of clean water then get another bottle when I'm out of trouble.

P.S. Here's a cheapskate's tip for you. You can go out and buy pricey, fancy schmantzy cleaner tabs OR you go to your local Supermarket and get some denture cleaner tablets. They are cheap, effective, and will clean just about anything.

I looked at them, and while they are nice and Swiss made, they seemed overpriced for what they are. Never used one though. I have an Ozark Trail bottle that seems at least as durable that cost 1/9th the price.

Anyone here have good/bad experiences with Sigg bottles?
Thanks, Shawn

The wife, our daughter and I have been using them around the house and I use them when on my walks and on short hikes and they do what they're supposed to do. No problems at all.

And the other thing about Aluminium is they can be used to sterilise water more ealsily than plastics...

On African ttruck tours all comers are expected to bring 2 aluminium waterbottles - each night a big kettle of water is boiled and all the are bottles are filled - by mornign they are cooled, sealed and ready for use.

Not something you can do with plastic bottles

My Sig holds 15 rounds 9mm...but I don't know how the heck you guys manage to keep all that water in there too!? :D
:p:D Ha!

Thanks for the tip!

No particularly bad or good experiences.

Pros:
Light weight
Some cooler surface designs than kleen kanteen (I think)
Liner supposedly fine with acidic drinks, and stays intact even if bottle dents

Cons:
Dents easily
Can't boil water in it
Not supposed to freeze water in it

Good feedback, thanks
Thanks to everyone that replied. I really like the siggs, but will also investigate the Kleen Kanteens. I currently have the nalgene wide mouth bottles, but neither my wife, nor I like them.
