There have been alot of postings lately about where to find Schrades, old displays in hardware stores and such. I suggest that we have a mod make this thread a sticky-thread so that folks looking for a place to pick up a Schrade have some suggestions. Us Schrade hunters can keep it updated and offer each other suggestions as we go, at least until the supply drys up to a point where its not viable any more.

I'll open with a place that isn't mentioned much, K-mart. I was in a K-mart yesterday and they had a pretty good supply of OT's, Toughtools, and few X-TIMERS in stock. The prices weren't discounted, but if you're looking for some, they had them.

If anyone knows how to do the sticky thing, please go ahead.

Help, help, help!!!.........OTguy is summoning up the ghost of the MODERATOR..

Just kidding... :D

I think your idea has merit, especially if we give geographical information. I don't think anybody but a moderator can do a sticky... ...but we can just keep posting and it will rise to the top.....like cream or yeast, I guess... :D

Here in the Phoenix area, most WalMarts still have some Schrades....but not discounted....except when they dumped the "Tactical" types before Christmas.

Walmart, Kmart, all of the big chain stores here in SW Tennessee are sold out of Schrades. I bought the last 152OT orphaned in the rangefinder display case at the Savannah Tn. Walmart over the holidays. I also bought out the few slipjoints our former Freds store had stuck back. One local lumber company still has a '02-'03 DU display with about half the knives in it, and I will go back this spring to pick through whatever is left, and maybe get the display case too. I am going to hit them up for all the old catalogs and price sheets while I am there.

Looking for a XT4?

I think its a fine idea. Shall I ask one of the moderators to help us out here?
Phil

I just suggested to Phil that he ask in the Service and Support forum for a super-mod to help.

BTW, I got my SMKW catalog yesterday and the back cover has a special on Schrade, an Old Timer Minuteman and an Uncle Henry Signature as a set.

Thanks, Ed. We'll just see what the guys wanna do herel

My suggestion for finding Schrades remains out of the way hardwares, tackle and bait shops, gun shops. I do understand this has not or can not work for some of you. My state here, Michigan, is an old rust belt state, hunting and fishing opportunities everwhere. Despite big-box stores and modern hardware chains, little mom and pop places are plentiful. One gun shop I stopped in recently had an old, excellent condition Camillus display case. The sales rep had long forgotten his out of the way customer. I bought the last remaining Camillus and gave got the display for a few more bucks.

The Schrade and Imperial displays and all the knives I picked up yesterday were from a hardware actually only one mile from a Wal*Mart, where the clerks in the sporting goods department are sick to death of guys wanting Old Timers. (the knives are long gone, replaced by Buck and Winchester China-made stuff) But all those guys were driving right by the hardware to get to the Wal*Mart.

Work the phones, if you have to. You can find yellow pages on the Web, give those out of the way places a try. Knowing Ohio and Illinios and Indiana as I do, I think there would be some prime treasures awaiting someone.

And give your opinion on the 'Sticky' idea.

Good hunting,
Phil

I know that we don't have a mod all to ourselves, but I don't think one would mind doing a small favor for us. Its up to you guys, just a suggestion.

If you Schrade guys haven't seen it yet -
please check out the Schrade web site:

however we realize that many of you would like to buy an Imperial Schrade product now. Smoky Mountain Knife Works in Tennessee has acquired the majority of inventory from the Imperial Schrade public auction. They are offering this inventory to you at tremedous savings, while supplies last. Please visit their website www.eknifeworks.com or call (800) 251-9306 for more information.

Like the notice says SMKW at

http://eknifeworks.com/

seems to have a large number of Schrades listed - although most (all?) of the 100 year dual shield commemoratives seem to be sold out - but there are still lots of Old Timers and Uncle Henrys shown as in stock..... a lot of them will come with authentification certificates to show that those are made in Ellenville, NY

However just a note -
the eknifeworks site seems to have been really erratic today - sometimes it works like a charm (like literally a few minutes ago), other times there seems to be real difficulties linking with their ordering/cart system -

for example, right now, I wanted to pull a quote about what SMKW had to say about the remaining Schrade stocks and certificates, and I can't even access eKnifeworks.com to do it, getting this error page:
QUOTE:
Smoky Mountain Knifeworks Error Page
Error: java.lang.RuntimeException: Could not get connection to the database. Check login information and connection pool size
An error has occured while processing your request. This is the Stack Trace of the error:
UNQUOTE

- that's just a difference of a few minutes - really, really frustrating  :barf: ...........

(I'll return and edit this post with the info when they are back up again)

Hopefully by the time you read this eKnifeworks.com will have fixed their website.......

EDIT to add -
The SMKW website is back up again - this is the blurb on most of the Schrade knives -
QUOTE:
SCHRADE CLOSES! On July 30, 2004 Schrade closed its doors. In business for 100 years, they will remain one of the top names in the cutlery industry. SMKW is your source for the last of the Schrade knives made in the Ellenville, New York factory! Because this is a warehouse buyout, packaging will vary (bulk, boxed or clampacked). Our choice only.
·Exclusive certificate of authenticity confirms that this knife is one of the final knives produced in the Ellenville factory!

The prices look real good too - for example
34OT is $14.99 (SMKW part # SC34)
SC34.jpg

or Uncle Henry Signature Stockman Staglon @ $17.99 (SMKW part #SC897)
SC897.jpg

both shown as in stock at this time of editting.

The SMKW supply is quicky dwindling. A couple of weeks ago several models kept fluxuating from Out of Stock to available, probably as they opened and inventoried the crates. Now it seems once something is listed as Out of Stock, it stays that way. Some models were never available, like the Senior Stockman.

On the original topic, could one of you regulars be appointed moderator for this forum? I wouldn't want this corner of the site to get overrun by trolls or shut down.

Heed that warning...

:D that's how I came across the Schrade website announcement. :D

I checked SMKW for a Schrade item that had been out of stock for ages - and found it was back in stock last night - and looking at other Schrade items I saw they also were back in stock - one item looked interesting - so I tried to get more info by going over to schradeknives.com and found the annoucement.........

So I thought I'd better post it here asap......

During the erratic behavior of eknifeworks.com I actually managed to place an order for some Schrade stuff and the order was accepted, confirmed and the items were shown as in stock... so we'll see when/if they arrive.

one of the items was this:
SCSLW2.jpg

Schrade Lake & Walker Tough Lock II - $14.99
SCSLW2
·Schrade+ stainless steel blade
·Thumb stud
·Grey Zylite® (Kevlar® and Zytel®) handle
·Lanyard hole
·Tough Lock mechanism is one of the safest and most reliable available with its sliding safety switch (instructions included)
·Stainless steel pocket clip
·4" closed.

The original BG-42 steel model was a ~$200 knife - the version 2 is only in Schrade+ stainless steel - but at less than 1/10th the price.....
(lowest price found using Froogle.com was $24.99)

AG Russell still has the $200 Lake and Walker in stock. It's obviously not the same knife as the mass-produced Lake and Walker- different blade and handle materials. I wonder how crappy the factory version actually is... anyone? I ordered one from SMKW, but it's not here yet. I'll do a quicky review once it comes.

-Bob

Bob, I've had/sold about a half dozen of these. I still have 1 NIB. I don't think they are crappy in the least. While the style, steel, and combo blade are not my choice for an EDC....the framelock with the additional Walker lock, the super tough handle material, and the feel of the knife in the hand, make it a good user. At the price it is a super deal, IMO.

Yes I saw the $200 version at agRussell.com -
actually that version is also mass produced -
manufactured by Schrade....

QUOTE:
Working together, they have invented a way to mass-produce the locking mechanism invented by Michael Walker, which I call a Walker-Lock. Since Michael did not patent the original mechanism, it has been copied by many makers and manufacturers. The two together have also developed a safety for the Walker-Lock which works very much like the safety on a gun. This one they patented. The Tough Lock makes use of both the Walker-Lock and the new Lake/Walker safety. Schrade did a superb job with the manufacturing.

As far as I can tell the handle material is the same Zylite (with Kevlar fibers and Zytel)

The photos on-line between the limited BG-42 edition and the cheap version 2 do look very similar and hard to tell apart.

The Schrade Forum "moderator" Tim Faust posted about the knives some years ago here:

Schrade Lake & Walker

There was another post on this forum in July/2004 about the SLW2

Schrade Lake & Walker

The poster liked it enough to buy another -
but of course the price was
$11!

Glad to hear it. I was afraid it was another of their disappointing gimmic-y knives, like the Cliphanger.

UnknownVT,
I had assumed the $200 limited edition knife would be hand fit and finished, but it's probably not if the ads don't highlight that. Yep, it seems the 'plastic' handle material is the same on both models, but the limited edition has "titanium coated hardware." Doesn't seem you get much for the $185 extra...

Thanks for the links. I'd been fence-sitting as to whether or not I should order the closeout Lake and Walker. I'm interested in knives with interesting or unique opening mechanisms or locks, so I eventually said what the heck. I still don't have mine yet, but after reading the links and comments here, I'm increasingly optimistic.

It would be interesting to compare the $15 (or $11 like the other guy paid) knife side-by-side with the $200 knife of the same design. But that's too expensive of an experiment for me. :)

Best Wishes,
Bob

Bob W,
The $11/$15 knife was actually selling for around $50 at one time. Probably just not alot of them... :(
The Walker lock/safety (LAWKS) alone is interesting enough... for someone who finds the mechanics of locks interesting and part of the reason they might collect a knife... to be worth the deep discounted price, IMO. It makes the knife a little less of a "Onehander" I suppose, but you don't even have to use it, it's still a framelock. I think the safety is pretty ingenious. Again, it's a nice "working" package.

Sorry for the "Thread" drift. SMKW is in Tenn.....(geographical reference to get back on point).

Bring on the STICKY...... :D

Bill

OTguy, no one was voting against having a 'sticky' as you suggested, so I made a motion down in 'service and support' to get us one. I assured the powers that be that we would not allow any individual to use it as a selling site.

By the way, guys.. Gold members can post Schrades they have for sale in the Exchange forum. I think anyone can use the 'trade' forum to swap. This may be a good idea. I have a few extras of some models and would like one or two others to fill holes in my displays.

Phil

Thanks tex, I appreciate your efforts. Just seems like a good idea for the present, I think alot of guys will be checking a thread like this as time goes by in order to try to fill out collections.
In that vein, theres a run down convience store up the road about a mile that has a old Schrade display, a good sized one, with several models that have been out of production even longer than the shutdown. One of the models is the 94OT trapper. I haven't bought from him before because he charges full suggested retail price and up until recently, I could buy on ebay cheaper. But thats changed now and I'm going to pick up a 94OT and a 77OT in the near future. This guy also has one of the biggest displays of Zippo lighters I've ever seen, fun to look at. Only ever had one Zippo when I smoked, a camo model I picked up while I was in the Army. Dropped it one day while I was out hunting and guess what? That camo worked great, never did find it.

A Zippo lighter is a good companion piece for an Old Timer knife, even for non-smokers. I only have one, WWII vintage that my dad carried aboard ship in both the Atlantic and Pacific. I seldom carry it myself, as it tends to bite the leg that carries it. I sent it back to Zippo about ten years ago to have the hinge repaired, warning them that it was an heirloom, and not to change the insert or the case. They returned it repaired free of charge, along with an extra new insert and a friendly note. That was the same repair service I had come to expect from Schrade.

Got ya coved on the sticky folks. Sorry it took so long to get to this and thanks to texastoothpick for pointing it out. Good hunting!

Gus

With your help we'll keep the spammers out should they even show up :D.

Another on-line source of Schrades seems to be Awesome Outdoor Arena
81 items on 9 pages are found on a search of Schrade (a lot are in stock), prices are pretty good but perhaps not as low as SMKW.

The seemly "rare" 8ot Old Timer Senior Stockman is listed as in stock there (twice!)

Item#: 4140080 @ $18.63

and

Item#: 4150018 @ $18.61

4140080.jpg

Sharpfingers 152ot seem to be out of stock at many places -
4140152.jpg

but use http://froogle.com to search for Schrade Sharpfinger and quite a few listings come up - most of the lower priced ones now show out of stock, but $25 and up are still around.......
Strangely enough one of the $25 listings is Ace Hardware (on-line) - the price is supposed to be for web purchases only -
but I wonder if one's local Ace Hardware stores have Schrades in stock?
