Silver Wire Inlay WIP

^what he said.

(I'm sure it was all good)

Nice, Karl! Have wanted to see a little inlay work in progress. Going to make a super looking hunter!

Great job, Karl. I, too, am a fan of silver inlay, but maple is not among my favorites for wood. Is there a particular reason that silver inlay is only found, at least by me, on maple handles? Are other woods too hard or too figured for inlay work?

You are mostly correct, Paul. The idea behind the wire inlay is that after you have "pushed" the wood grain aside, when you wet it back up, the grain in curly maple will swell back to its original size and "grab" the wire.
Some walnut is conducive to wire inlay.
I also think there's a small amount of tradition involved here as well. We are using a method that was used to embellish a lot of the early American and European side-lock black powder rifles. As well as Tomahawks, etc.
I guess you either like it - or you don't.
Keep your eye open for a Bowie from Andersen Forge that will have wire inlay, but the Curly Maple will be VERY BLACK!!
Or will that be an Integral Camp Knife?
Guess you'll have to wait to see.
That'll give it an entirely different flavor!

Here's how she turned out:

Very nice Karl, that inlay can be a time comsuming ordeal but well worth the effort when it turns out like that.

Thank you Karl for taking the time to do the WIP. your a good teacher. and the knife looks great.

Amazing what a little color can do to some nice curly maple!

What kind of color and what kind of finish ?

Nice Karl! Smart layout of the design too, works well w/ the shape of the handle. Thanks for the look at how its done.

I gave it a deep, wet dye job with dark brown Feibings.
A soaking coat of gun stock finish and dry overnight.
Hard 0000 steel wool rub-down, and then another coat of gun stock finish - dry overnight.
Two coats of gun Stock wax and buff.
