Simple Knives

Really good suggestion on the Svord. Funny thing is is that I am in NZ right now. I need to keep my eyes pealed for one of these. Good piece to remind me of NZ. BTW all the other suggestions are great too, keep them coming.

I've been giving Svord knives as gifts for years, and everybody loves them, from hunters in South Africa to the medieval re-enactment crowd who use them for crafts and banquets...

definitely has my vote, and the fact that they are locally made is a bonus!

ESEE Izula. You can't go wrong.

+1:

The Izula is definitely on my list. I own a ESEE-5 at the moment and find it along with my A-100 fills all my needs. But, that is not to say the Izula would do any harm ;).

On the cheap... Cold Steel Bushman and Pocket Bushman.

Spyderco Paramilitary. At first it seems like a complicated lock design, but once you take a good look at it, you realize it's so simple it borders on perfection.

As for the rest of the knife. I don't think a single part of it was designed with aesthetics in mind. Which is why it's so good looking.

Hmmm, it seems some people don't want to play. It displeases me much when people try to shut down a thread just because they don't agree with the OP. If you don't agree with my line of thought in the area of simple that is fine, but please don't hijack my thread. I really mean that, and I say it with respect. I am sure that you all had good intentions by your posts but it still is kind of unnecessary. Again, I have not met any of you in person so I cannot say that you are trolls or any of the sort, I might just be missing the intention of the post all together. Thanks guys.

I guess I will try and get this thread going a different direction. How about we post knives that follow the basic idea of the Emerson A-100.

Much Respect

Nobody's trying to shut down your thread. And nobody's disagreeing with you.

They (like me) don't understand what you mean by "simple."

Nothings more simple than a fixed blade...and I didn't see any of those on your original list.

An to be honest...I have no idea what "the basic idea of the Emerson A-100" means either.

That's what i was getting at, If you are going to say a Sebenza is a simple knife, you would have to say any liner or frame lock also is. They all are about alike nearly as far as complexity. Lock-backs too are pretty simple as a rule. Lots of those don't have bolsters.
I just don't think knives get too complicated, until you get into assisted opening, autos, locks that require springs to activate, ball bearings in the pivot. Secondary locks, multiple blades and tools, maybe a few other things I haven't thought of.

to the OP: define simple, do you mean: usage of the knife

: level of engineering / design input

: ease of maintenance / dissasembly

: simple in construction / minimal amount of parts

for example i wouldn't rate a Sebenza as 'simple' if level of design / manufacturing was a given criteria

get some particulars going bud, this can be a good thread! ;)

My bad. There is a fixed blade on your original list...the Chris Reeve Integral.

Doesn't make me less confused. Is a knife with a hollow handle and screw on buttcap simple? How does that add to the functionality of the knife? It doesn't help it cut, does it?

The most simple fixed blade is a shiv... people make them in prison all the time from stuff you wouldn't believe. I think that king of the most simple knife... lol...

Very true. I cannot believe I forgot Opinel.

Well...you did tell us

Please tell me your thoughts.

It certainly is a thought-provoking thread, because I've been thinking about it for a while, and, for the life of me, I can't figure out what common factor would allow and Opinel and a Emerson A-100 to be on the same list.

Don't get me wrong...I'm a huge fan of function over form.

And I gotta add, didja ever notice when people on forums throw out "displeases me," and "hijack," and "trolls"....and then throw in something like "Much Respect" or "God Bless" or "Good Day" ...they usually dont mean it? They usually mean something else.
