Single Action Afficianados?

How are y'all measuring the throats? I've gotten mixed results trying to measure with a caliper. I've found that a .452 bullet is snug in the throats. I've slugged the barrel, but I'm not sure about my measurements since they are 5 grove. I do know the sluggs that were formed in the barrel, do NOT want to go through the cylinder throats.

I think that Rugers are more notorious for under sized throats than S&W? To measure the throats I used a telescoping gauge and a micrometer but you could slug it as well or use gauge pins. I slugged my barrel and measured the top of the lands as that would be the major dia. You don't want your throat to make your bullet smaller than the major dia. of the barrel. Especially important when shooting lead.

When I was reaming the chambers on the rugers I measured several smith and weasons and had to ream 2 out of 4, they weren't a lot too small just a little. You get alot better accuracy with the throats of the cylinder a little larger than the barrel. I use Hunters supply bullets and have for years with excellant results. Both for hunting and cowboy action competing.
