single alox colored sak days are gone

The Victorinox Farmer is my all time favorite knife, and I like it just the way it is, thank you very much.

Uh oh... Am I in trouble?! :D Don't get me wrong, I think it's a fine multi-tool.

It's actually my first Farmer. Previously, I didn't think I needed a saw and I had never been tempted to forsake my beloved Soldier. But I have to say that saw is NICE! No branch is safe from me now! ;)

BUT, in the last 5 or so years I've never used the can opener. Ever. Except as a driver.

I would much rather have the can opener left intact because I've successfully used the tip of it on probably thousands of #2 Phillips screws found on the aircraft I was involved with maintaining.

In your opinion, do the Victorinox combination #1/#2 drivers not fit #2 screws as well as the can opener/driver?

No, you're not in trouble with me. I guess I'm just a little opinionated about the things that I've proven to work well for me over a long time. Sorry if I came across as harsh. I like the can opener on the Farmer because I've used it many times to open a can of tuna or soup to make lunch with, as well as using the tip to snug up loose Phillips screws on aircraft. Vibration is a constant problem on anything that flies (except birds and bugs), so fasteners do work loose many times. Often they are spotted during a preflight "walk-around" when you aren't carrying a proper screwdriver and time is limited. I've tried "several" models of Victorinox SAKs, and I like them all, but I find those that have Phillips screwdrivers, awls, etc. located on the back of the knife are much less convenient to use than when they come out the end. I have nothing against a dedicated Phillips screwdriver on the end, but the Farmer has all the features I find most important, plus it's an exceptionally sturdy model. The saw is something I seldom use, but it takes up so little space, and it's always there, sharp and ready, to quickly solve an emergency problem that might arise.

Good points. The Phillips on the back that unfolds 90 degrees is a bit awkward for some tasks because it requires greater clearance. I also prefer the Phillips on the end of the handle even though the Phillips head is a bit unusual in shape.

I suppose one benefit of the combination can opener/screwdriver is that it's skinnier than the other Phillips drivers.

Here's the picture you've all been waiting for guys. I'm posting this for Roger(swissbianco).

I've been really waiting for those pics but please forgive me.. To me they look like SAK's after a head on collision with a magic marker :D

Sorry if I offended anyone, it's not the intention. I'll stick to the regular Alox

I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I can assure you that a hell of a lot more work and effort went into putting these knives together and making the special splashed alox run than anything someone could do with a magic marker.

Roger (swissbianco) works VERY hard to bring custom SAKs to us SAK lovers that are true custom pieces, but still have full factory warranties.
The splashed alox knives are only one example of his work. He has made other knives come to be that would have never been made otherwise, and he does it at very reasonable prices.

Here's a couple of examples of his work that you may find more to your liking:
All knives pictured below are the creation of Roger(swissbianco)

I forgot to mention that Roger also has some Damscus bladed SAKs in the works that look AMAZING!!!

He also make some eaually impressive fixed blade knives, and some of the sweetest looking neck knives you've ever seen.

Oh man I need one of those Yeomen!

Where do I sign?

If you or anyone else would like the chance to buy one of Roger's awesome knives the best thing you can do is to sign up for his newsletter. That is where he anounces pre-orders as well as currently available knives.

To sign up simply send him an E-mail to swissbianconews@hotmail.com asking him to put you on his list to receive the newsletter.

Thanks Tolly, I've done that. I can't wait to see more of this kind of work!

That Yeoman is nearly perfect for me. Just fantastic. I also love the way that the layers with the scissors and the phillips/magnifier have been swapped from the original Yeoman. It's great to have scissors near the edge of a tool, as it is easier to get them out (the phillips is always easy enough to get out - especially if you have tough nails like me) and they also seem nicer to use that way. Maybe it's just me, but I love the way it looks.

SAK lust. It's a terrible thing. Must satisfy craving. signing up for newsletter as we speak . . . :o

Thanks for that info, Tolly.

thx - cpr

I love the look of the partial-black Alox there...

Also wondering why we don't see more red Alox?

Roger, your multi-color Alox SAKs are interesting, but, being older and "stuck in my ways," I prefer the traditional bright red Alox that I'm accustomed to. I think a bright green Alox would be beautiful, too, though.

Victorinox knives must be the most consistently high quality production knives produced anywhere. With my old Farmer and a model 5WR Vise-Grip plier there isn't a lot that I can't fix. That combination is more useful than most of the pliers-based multi-tools sold, in my opinion. Look at the Vise-Grip line and think about it some. There is also a model 4WR, but it's just a little too small for my tastes. The number indicates the length in inches, the W means it has a wire cutter in the design, and the R means it has rounded jaws, as opposed to straight jaws. Speaking from long experience with them, I believe that the WR Vise-Grips are the most useful type generally.

well, dont worry, that verry little number of sutch splash i make compared to the standart silver alox avaliable i havent to worry to find people that like that "marker accident" look, laugh a lot about that.

the splash is unique, like damascus, the owner will now that pcs will exist only once in the world, exactly like this he or she has.

also thats only the start, diffrent alu finish, from matte for camo, medium factory original to high polished. and sure i will make some in single solid color, say all over orange or black, personally i would love an orange alox lumberjack, maybe with silver and black splash. the possibilities are near endless.

enjoy your traditional single color sak that has been made in tousands of pcs and that is avaliable in any shop :D

Here's another look at some more of Swissbianco's splashed Alox knives..This picture is a little blurry around the edges but it sill shows the colors well.

I will be posting some pictures taken in natural light of some splashed alox knives soon.

You are not alone! Roger found that there is about 50/50 split between people who love these and people who say that he "rouined perfectly good alox". Roger's take on it is: "Great, that means there will be more of these left for people who like them!"

My comment on the subject was that there is plenty of people who think that Kandinsky, Malevich, and others were ruining perfectly good piecs of canvas in their time :D

Alexei

if i would listen what others say i would not making knives or stay in usa for the 11. time. and i would sure not enjoy life.

lets only say i think a lot of ruining another good run of alox in diffrent ways and make some people, me included, happy.

i only wonder what the victorinox factory people that assembeld and packed that sak have think about it? no one of those people is in the forums etc, thats an shame.

I'm split 50/50 on the 50/50! :D

I.e., some of the patterns look really cool to me, others (mostly the ones with all-pastel vs. all-primary color schemes) are not as appealing. I hope (and expect) Roger will find a market, whether it's with "pick-and-choose" types like me or "give me one of everything" types. :)
