Single blade trapper

Take a look at Queen Cutlery's Utility Knife. Good sturdy D2 blade on this one!

You might try looking around for a Case 6107; there are currently a few out there with FORD emblems, blue bone handles, and a stouter Clip Blade. I have a Zytel version with a DU emblem from the DU 75th a few years back (2012). OH

The GEC #48 is available in 3 blade profiles. The newest release has the big clip profile like tstaut's ebony one. The Nortwoods Hawthorn Clip and Scagel Fruitport Clip have the same profile but different grinds. There's also a narrower clip blade that was also made in 440C. If you want a wharncliffe version then you need to look for a Hawthorn or Fruitport wharncliffe one. Pretty much all the single blade GEC #48s are sold out except for a handful of stags.

The GEC #73 like kamagong's is a heavy trapper roughly the same length as the #48. The #23 is the much larger one at 4 1/2" closed.

Canal Street's HMTs are similar in size to the #48 but available with, 14-4 CrMo stainless, Latrobe's version of 154CM .

One not mentioned yet is Queen's #11 Utility although it probably feels close to the Case in hand but with D2 steel and I believe thicker blade stock.

Since I have the pics, here are some variations on GEC's #48 pattern

Scagel Fruitport clip (never snagged a wharncliffe version :()

I am really digging the big clip on the GEC # 48 and I think my heart is set on that one. Do you rotate between these? or is one the daily user?

The GEC 48 pattern is the best one I've seen & do like the larger blade, but I've carried Case slimline trappers for many years and the slim blades are definitely not fragile.

I think what I had originally wanted, was a case trapper with the spey removed. There used to be some posts about a knife modder that did that for money. I wonder if thats still around. But since seeing these canal streets half moons, GECs, and Queen cutlery single blades, I think I can shop around a bit more.

For me the Case slimline 48 carries better than the full size trapper. The GEC 48 is perfect in my eyes, as it's size is between the slim and reg trapper, but still has the serpentine shape and slimness, with a larger blade.

Actually, I don't really use these as daily users too much anymore... I have carried the burnt stag and snakewood ones in the first pic as well as the Scagel in the last pic. I have also carried all of my Queen #11s below and at least half of my Half Moons. Right now I have the Gray Bone HMT (6th from left) out next to my computer in case I want to use a single blade trapper.

Typically however, I carry one of my GEC #48 Jacks. This is my collection pic and my users. I found that when I carried a single blade trapper, I also carried a second knife like a Half Congress or a MOHO. To me, it is better to also have the secondary pen blade (which is about 2 1/8 long, like a Case Peanut's main blade) for just a few millimeters extra thickness then to also carry 2 knives. For the past 2 months though, I've been carrying a full 2 blade GEC #48 Trapper because its 440C and its been really humid. I'm itching to go back to my jacks though.

Just to throw out something different. If it weren't strictly right handed I'd be in posession of that Boker Urban Trapper. It's not traditional in style, it's even a flipper. To me though it's the sweetest looking knife available. If it could be converted to left hand clip carry I'd put up with the right handed frame lock. Anyway it's worth checking out.

Only thing I can think of is that Queen is by far the oldest, so all their machinery is probably completely paid off, while the others are still recouping their expenses.

GEC needs to catch up, i like that dogleg, but dont like the price that much

That price is more reflective of stag being the handle than anything else. The ebony and maroon linen single blades were almost half that.

As for the Mako, I don't have a #63 but I do have this old group comparison pic with a #65 Ben Hogan (same blades as the #63, same handle length but different shape) with one of my #48 Jacks. Hope it helps.

For reference, top to bottom is the #65 Ben Hogan, #89 Executive Whittler, #48 Jack, #85 Bullet End Jack, #66 Jack, and #33 Conductor.

Btw, you should enable email. It makes it easier for people to contact you.
