The GEC #48 is available in 3 blade profiles. The newest release has the big clip profile like tstaut's ebony one. The Nortwoods Hawthorn Clip and Scagel Fruitport Clip have the same profile but different grinds. There's also a narrower clip blade that was also made in 440C. If you want a wharncliffe version then you need to look for a Hawthorn or Fruitport wharncliffe one. Pretty much all the single blade GEC #48s are sold out except for a handful of stags.
The GEC #73 like kamagong's is a heavy trapper roughly the same length as the #48. The #23 is the much larger one at 4 1/2" closed.
Canal Street's HMTs are similar in size to the #48 but available with, 14-4 CrMo stainless, Latrobe's version of 154CM .
One not mentioned yet is Queen's #11 Utility although it probably feels close to the Case in hand but with D2 steel and I believe thicker blade stock.
Since I have the pics, here are some variations on GEC's #48 pattern
GEC #48 Slim 1095
GEC #48 Slim 440C
GEC #48 Big Clip 1095
Northwoods Hawthorne
Scagel Fruitport clip (never snagged a wharncliffe version)

Take a look at Queen Cutlery's Utility Knife. Good sturdy D2 blade on this one!

I think what I had originally wanted, was a case trapper with the spey removed. There used to be some posts about a knife modder that did that for money. I wonder if thats still around. But since seeing these canal streets half moons, GECs, and Queen cutlery single blades, I think I can shop around a bit more.
I am really digging the big clip on the GEC # 48 and I think my heart is set on that one. Do you rotate between these? or is one the daily user?
Thanks man!I would like to have a Don Hanson III made single blade trapper.![]()

. . . really makes me wonder about these prices tho, between queen and GEC, and Canal street cutlery. what differs between these companies
Only thing I can think of is that Queen is by far the oldest, so all their machinery is probably completely paid off, while the others are still recouping their expenses.
That price is more reflective of stag being the handle than anything else. The ebony and maroon linen single blades were almost half that.
As for the Mako, I don't have a #63 but I do have this old group comparison pic with a #65 Ben Hogan (same blades as the #63, same handle length but different shape) with one of my #48 Jacks. Hope it helps.
For reference, top to bottom is the #65 Ben Hogan, #89 Executive Whittler, #48 Jack, #85 Bullet End Jack, #66 Jack, and #33 Conductor.
