Howdy All,

Getting ready to move to New York from rural Oregon, and want a knife that's NYC legal. Most of the knives that I currently own, cherish, and carry daily, seem like they could be categorized as "gravity knives".

What's Important to me:
-traditional and non-intimidating appearance
-strong preference to single blade, nothing too thin or delicate
-that it require two hands to open
-any other qualities that make it NYC safe
-under $35
-limited play
-that it gets wicked sharp

What I wouldn't mind:
A locking mechanism beyond your standard slipjoint, though not sure of legality.

What I don't care about:
-Corrosion resistance
-Status
-Country of Origin

I was leaning towards an Opinel #7, but I read that they can sometimes be flicked open one handed(gravity knife?), especially when the handles dry out a bit. I'm currently favoring the idea of a Sodbuster Jr. CV. Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

What I've read is that no part of the pocket knife can be visible, kind of the opposite of what I'm used to, having grown up in an open carry state.

I have a CV Sodbuster Jr. Thats been my favorite knife for a couple years now. I live in a rural area where pocket knives are very prevalent so I can't speak to how threatening it seems to non knife people. But its been durable and dependable. Also is super easy to put a really nice edge on Case CV.

Sounds wierd for NYC. Likely trying to set you up for a concealment charge. I'd get that one in writing.

Hey Pipeman,
I've read the laws several times, and they're rather vague, which I believe is on purpose.

I've never held a Sodbuster so I don't want to dissuade you but...
I would try that Opinel as long as the thickness of the handle isn't a turn off (good in a backpack or coat pocket, not in pants). I doubt it would be considered a gravity knife, especially if you lock it closed when you carry it in public. I'd also recommend an Alox Cadet if the tools would be handy, and they probably would at some point.
edit: I forgot the single blade preference but a Victorinox Solo is another option.

Sodbuster Jr in CV
Your choice, yellow or orange

Hard to be accused of concealing a weapon when its bright orange :D

You can get a single blade peanut or a GEC Pemberton, both under 3 inches closed.

Regards

Robin

I'd agree with the Alox Cadet suggestion. I know you want a single blade knife but it's thinner than any single blade knife I own.

I'd also suggest the Buck 503 Prince. Great small knife with lockback.

I've been thinking about the Vic Solo. Your mentioning the thickness of the Opinel handle does make me think it might not be ideal for what I'm looking for. Thanks.

Hey Pipeman,
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm not a huge fan of the peanut pattern. I like the looks of the pemberton, but it looks like finding one under $35 isn't likely.

The Rancher is a shadow pattern of the Sodbuster but it's thinner with a wider blade.

Sorry Ian, forgot about the $35.oo limit. There are Lots of very nice small pen knives on the auction site. Old knives are very difficult to call a weapon and never frightening looking.

Best regards

Robin
