Single phase motor on 3 phase power

Well, I have found two motors locally:
Both 1800 rpm and 2hp and 3ph.

One is brand new and is $195

One is a 1986 Baldor used at $125.

What do you guys think?

To give you a frame of reference, I bought a 3 hp 3 phase new Baldor 1750 rpm for 250. Likely could have gotten it cheaper. What brand is the other motor? I'd pass on the 26 year old Baldor.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought this is pretty much what a rotary phase converter is?

If i had read “rotary phase converter“ i might have made that corelation. I only know something like that as a motor generator set.

I do know of someone that created a third phase leg using a capasitor bank, i think it was the capasitor time constant that created a third phase at 60hz. I dont profess to know the details of it though.

I would also add gentlemen, with regard to shop overhead; You do not want to run anymore horsepower in a motor than you need to. It literally pays to google horsepower calculations, adjust and change capacitors and or add them where they are missing, and using a 1 hp instead of a 2 hp, is the better choice if you have options and the patience to look it up.
