During our winter which typically last anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months here in SW Florida we like to sit around the fire pit on weekend nights. What knife would be a good choice for making wood shavings from firewood to get the fire started and maybe do a little whittling during the burn? Folder or fixed? What do you use; pics appreciated.

Production: Becker BK16
Custom: Anything from Daado (Dalibor seckard) or JK Knives makes plenty to suit your needs.

+1 for JK, John is a heck of a good guy to deal with and his knives are top quality. If you don't want to spend very much go with a Mora.

For shavings and whittling, the Mora Companion which comes from a great woodcarving pedigree.

Almost any knife would do both of those things, but a knife that is good for whittling wont necessarily excel at making wood shavings. Sounds like you need a traditional knife like this Stockman. Large main blade for making shaving and the small pen blade and wharncliff for whittling. There are a lot of threads in the traditional sub section with great suggestions for whittling and any of the bushcraft threads for making the shavings.

Case medium stockman

Pretty much any knife can shave wood. If you want a folder for whittling, a tradtional knife would probably be your best bet

I use my Fiddleback Forge Bushfinger for just about everything around the fire (it is probably the nicest knife I've ever owned), but you can almost any reasonably sized knife to whittle wood and most of them will be less expensive.

^^^Yep, as onojoe said. I always have a medium stockman on me when camping or just sitting around a fire.

I"d just grab a Mora myself. I prefer fixed blades for any "real" amount of carving/whittling. They're excellent carving knives, and they are super inexpensive. Enough so when people ask for one of their own to carve/whittle, its not a big deal to get them their own.

My wife kept stealing mine for the same purpose while we're camping, so I got her her own.

I do also quite like my BK16, but thats literally 4-5x more expensive than the mora.

If you're sitting around a fire with your buddies, maybe a bali would be fun. It can do whittle and you can impress your friends by flipping it. Or just go for a Mora or something

If you want pure performance for carving and shaving wood then a Mora is the way to go. If other aspects are important any knife you like will work.

Smith & Wesson.

That way I dont feel bad if it gets left there.

You could say the same for every situation. Dude you need to take better care of and keep track of your knives 👍 I never have to worry about if I'm gonna lose my knife because I just don't do it ( twice when I was a kid and I am glad they were cheapo's but never again )
Why would carry a lesser knife as an excuse to be careless with them.
I hope there are more people like you around so I can find a spyderco delicate laying on the sidewalk 😉

Anyway enough of that, which model of S & W knife do you think would actually be good for whittling around the fire ? a lot of knives will work, but there's just something about sitting around a fire that begs for a traditional.

I usually reach for an Opinel 10.

Usually I have much more expensive blades, but that one gets a lot of use!
